Game 1 | Zards: 80 - Not A Dime Back: 85

NADB Stay On Top in Comeback Win Vs. Zards

It’s no secret that NADB have climbed their way to the top of the CAC A League through their defensive cohesiveness, lights-out three point shooting, and above all, their insane team chemistry. At the same time, though, there’s no shortage of talent on this team, and their top guys are as good as anyone’s. They entered this game without Connor, Black, and Coulter, finding themselves down 37-44 at the half. Zards had three fill-ins, but with all three playing at a high level, NADB needed to respond. They did just that, finishing the game shooting a staggering fourteen of twenty-five (56%) from deep, accumulating 21 assists as a team, and knocking down their free-throws in crunch time. They finished this one off with an 85-80 victory, moving to 3-0 on the season and boasting the league’s best defense through three games.

Even without three of their top players, NADB still boasts the league’s best point guard in Jon Luster, and he showed out once again in this one. Luster shot six of eleven from downtown to finish with 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists. After a relatively quiet first half, Luster hit a flurry of threes in the second to bring his team into the lead, and he proceeded to go a perfect eight for eight from the free-throw line to ice the game. He just doesn’t make mistakes, always limiting turnovers, shooting efficiently, and coming up clutch when he’s called on. Dre Kontopidis was also stellar in this one, dominating inside and in the mid-range as usual, but also going three of five from three. He finished with 23 points, 7 boards, and a game-high 6 assists, picking apart Zards’ zone defense from the free-throw line extended. Marcus Giese was solid inside, adding a 13 point, 12 rebound double-double, plus 1 block and 3 assists, and one thunderous dunk off an inbounds play. He does a phenomenal job on defense, especially keeping guys off the offensive glass, and he also drew a charge, a true men’s league hero. Mike Synott stepped up majorly on offense, hitting two threes and a crazy lefty floater to finish with 12 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 3 blocks. His defense and ball movement are always top notch, complementing his teammates well, but he continues to step up his scoring when called upon. Chris Cusano missed his first three threes, in the first half, but distributed the ball well to finish with 5 assists before the intermission. In the second half, he hit some clutch threes down the stretch to hold the lead, and finished with an impressive 9 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals, impacting both ends. Altogether a fantastic effort from all five players on NADB, with the stars showing up and the role playing rising to the occasion to keep the win streak rolling.

Weird outing for Zards, who had three players filling in, but all of whom played well. Dan Wohl led the scoring as usual, pouring in 25 points, plus 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. He shot six of thirteen from three, showing off his three level scoring ability and coming alive in the second half to keep Zards in the game amidst the NADB second half push. Matt Karpowicz had a stellar game filling in, dominating inside with an 18 point, 11 rebound double-double, including two threes and some strong finishes at the rim. He also came up with 5 assists and 1 steal, showing some impressive court vision and generating ample scoring opportunities with screen assists for shooters. Mike LastName filled in at the point, putting up 18 points, 1 rebound, 5 assists, and 2 steals, getting to the rim at will with a shifty handle and quick first step. He hit a few threes and facilitated well, and he actually did a nice job keeping Luster in check for most of the game with steady ball pressure. Dom Mastascusa was the final fill-in, and he showed off some nifty footwork down low and a smooth jumper as well. He finished with 17 points and 10 boards (4 offensive), and was a force on the interior all game. Craig Melillo struggled in this one, finishing with 2 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal, missing all seven of his three-point attempts. A longstanding elite shooter in this division, he will see better days and bounce back in the coming weeks, but he could not find the range in this one, as Zards fall to 1-2 on the season.

Game 2 | Spida Men: 81 - Team Takeover: 63

Spida Men Put Together Strong Second Half, Cruise to Victory

In our second 5v5, no-sub matchup of the evening, the Spida Men turned to their size advantage against Team Takeover’s four guard, one big lineup. With a tight 38-32 lead at the half, the Spida Men turned it up in the second period. They dominated the glass, finishing with 42 team rebounds to just 30 for Team Takeover, and with Jamal Brown back in the lineup, Team Takeover had no answer for for Spida Men’s fast paced offense. The Spida Men would go on to win this game, 81-63.

Danny Martin Jr. was the biggest beneficiary of Brown’s return, as he finished with a dominant 38 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal. He shot four of five from the free-throw line, and he picked up tons of easy buckets by sprinting in transition, where his team always does a nice job finding him and rewarding his motor. He also displayed his signature righty hook shot, getting to his spots at will and finishing effectively as always. Jamal Brown returned with a triple-double of 14 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block, making an immediate impact. He had some strong finishes inside and did a fantastic job distributing in transition, as he frequently pushes the break off of a defensive board. He still can’t shoot, but his return is a welcome sight for the Spida Men. Tim Gallivan had a strong game with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 3 blocks. His defensive presence inside alters tons of shots, and he always comes up with a few blocks and tons of rebounds as well. His finishing on offense, paired with the threat of his long ball, opens up a ton of room for his team to operate and get to their spots, and his versatility as a player is a huge part of Spida Men’s success. Lucio Dahlstedt-Brown made his season debut with 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist, and he looked comfortable attacking closeouts off the catch, while Cedric White added 4 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block in a well rounded effort as a role player in this one. Without Mazz to jack threes, the Spida Men rely heavily on their old-school, low-post style of play, and it worked fabulously in this one. They pick up their first win of the season after some solid performances against two of the league’s best teams.

Team Takeover falls to 0-3 on the season, and their lack of size really hurt them in this game. Jared Johnson continues to score at a high clip, finishing with 24 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. He attacks effectively from the perimeter with some strong finishes and beautiful floater package, and while his shot has been off this session, he has proven to be a reliable shooter in the past. Michel Toney stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists (team high), 5 steals (game high), and 1 block. He knocked down three triples, facilitated effectively, and brought his usual defensive intensity with a nice chasedown block and 5 steals as well. Trevor Parker added 11 points, 9 boards, 1 assist, and 3 steals, playing decently but not quite up to his standards. Combined, these three shot five of twenty-four (20.8%) from three, which isn’t going to cut it against the shooting prowess of the other teams in this league. Sana Dahaba hit two of his five three-point attempts, finishing with 8 points, 5 boards, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Dahaba has been very solid this session, proving to be a solid shooter and reliable ball handler as well. Julian Beach did an admirable job down low in this game as his team’s only real big. He finished with 7 points, 9 rebounds (4 offensive), 2 steals, and 2 blocks, battling hard against Spida Men’s bigs and doing a lot of the dirty work on defense. There are a lot of positives on this roster, but Team Takeover will need to improve from three and on defense to pick up some wins as the season wears on.

Game 3 | Suffolk: 63 - West Coast Shooters: 88

West Coast Shooters Win In Another Offensive Masterclass

West Coast Shooters continue to run circles around their opponents in the regular season, shooting a ridiculous seventeen of thirty-five from three and tallying 24 assists and 12 steals as a group. Their offensive explosiveness paired with the defensive focus of guys like Tam and Pattyson from the Shooters Shoot squad make this a fearsome team on both ends. Suffolk was without Bolden Brace, and WCS took full advantage with a commanding 46-33 lead at the half. The second half was much of the same, as they expanded their lead, winning 88-63.

Jack Simonds made his session debut and was the best player on the floor in this one. He shot three of five from deep and I’m not sure I saw him miss a mid-range jumper all night. The stretch-big finished with 23 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists (game high), and 2 steals in the win, doing a bit of everything to lead his team in points and assists. Jordan Rote is another guy who can go get a bucket at any time, as he put up 19 points, 7 boards, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Rote shot three of six from three, canned all four of his free-throw attempts, and used his lightning quick first step to get downhill at will. Matt Pattyson followed up his 19 point performance last week with 17 this week, plus 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. He shot four of five from deep and continues to show off his playmaking while maintaining his presence as an elite perimeter defender. Derek Retos hit another four threes to finish with 12 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal, while Stephen Tam was impactful, particularly on defense, with 5 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block. Tom Palleschi led the team with 9 rebounds and Jack Fay chipped in 7 points and 3 assists, and West Coast Shooters find themselves with the league’s best record and the largest point differential.

Suffolk were missing perhaps the best player in the league in Bolden Brace, and it showed, as they only recorded 11 assists as a team. Logan O’Donnell stepped up with 20 points, 12 boards, 1 assist, and 2 steals. The big man has shown off some impressive footwork over the last two sessions, but knocked down three triples in this one as well. His offensive outburst adds a needed interior presence to open up space for shooters and George Grillakis on the drive. Grillakis also had a solid game, finishing with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. WCS definitely put an emphasis on containing his drives, but he was still able to attack effectively, drawing fouls and finishing well inside. He leads the league in scoring, is second in made 2pt fgs, and is first in both made and attempted free-throws. Nick Budesheim was extremely active in this game, and his high motor effort kept Suffolk in the game for stretches. He chipped in 12 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block, and his 4 offensive rebounds were a game-high and a boost for his team. It wasn’t enough to pull out the win, but after showing some flashes in the first two games, it’s clear that Budesheim needs to be more active in Suffolk’s offensive game plan. Sam Holtze returned with 6 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal. As one of Suffolk’s top players on both ends, he will need to shake the rust off and return to form quickly with so many competitors in this division, though I’m confident he will bounce back immediately. Yusuf Liban added 2 points and 1 rebound, while fill-in Blake LastName chipped in 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. As a group, Suffolk shot three of twenty from deep and five of fifteen from the free throw-line, which can be chalked up to a bad performance from them. Still, without Brace to control the flow of the game, Suffolk struggled on offense and will need to be better going forward to get back in the win column.

Game 4 | Ronin Blood Warriors: 83 - We The Ones!: 61

Ronin Blood Warriors Massacre We The Ones in Glorified Pickup Game

This game got out of hand quickly, as Ronin Blood Warriors went up 51-28 at the half. A completely one-sided affair, RBWs were implementing a trap press near half court for much of the game, applying too much pressure with their length and athleticism for We The Ones to handle. After the half, we ran out the time quickly, as things just got more ugly as time wore on. After probably only 32 minutes of actual basketball (if you can call it that), the refs called the game and RBW walked away with an 83-61 victory.

Again, the effort and actual basketball being played in this game were questionable, but there were a few notable performances. Marcin Papla made his debut and started the game going a perfect seven of seven from three. He ended up shooting nine of thirteen, and while the defense wasn’t the best at times, there were some contested shots, and nine threes is nine threes no matter how you slice it. He finished with 27 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal, and I’m curious to see how he plays in a real game, though I think he’s made it clear he can shoot with anyone in this league. Deven Palmer added a smooth 22 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 6 steals, and 2 blocks, going about half speed. Not his best shooting performance at thirty percent from deep, but he was just a step ahead of everyone else on the court and will be able to get whatever he wants on offense, even in real games as well. Arinze Obiora was also impressive with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals, knocking down four threes, while Ray Miller added 8 points and 5 steals and Guy Pistone chipped in 6 points and a game-high 8 assists. It’s still difficult to place RBW in the rankings, as they blew out WTOs in this game, beat Zards in a forfeit and barely lost to defending champion NADB. Time will tell, but they certainly have the talent to go far.

We The Ones were outclassed in this game, plain and simple. Ty Moore was not, though, as he shot ten of eighteen from three for 33 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. Even though full court pressure, double-teams, and basically the entire defense focused on him, Moore was phenomenal, hitting deep threes of the dribble, sprinting around screens for looks off the catch, and generally being the only player on WTOs who could compete in this game. Moore is currently fifth in scoring among players who have played more than one game, and has been impressive in every outing this season. Other than that, big man Akim Sanni had 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 block, while Kahreem Blake chipped in 5 points, 9 boards, and 3 assists. Jordan Carter hit a three for 3 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals, but ultimately there just wasn’t much to write home about for WTOs, who were missing Jalen Bruce and Grady Levi sorely in this one. Game 1 | Splash City: 39 - Bear: 66

Bears Pick Up First Win in Dominant Fashion

After two fairly competitive games against the league’s top two teams, the Bears finally land a win against Splash City. Up 40-12 at the half, this game was never in doubt, and the Bears won by a decisive final of 66-39.

John Bowllan led the scoring with 17 points on three of five shooting from three, adding 11 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block. Bowllan has been extremely active on both ends for the Bears this session, but finally got his offense going in this game, making some impressive fade-away threes from the corner and finishing well inside on the break. Danny Shapiro put up 13 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists (game-high), and 2 steals in the win, going three of six from deep and facilitating well from the point guard spot. He also had a mean ankle breaker in the mid-range on a stepback, making his defender touch earth. Will Estes was on fire in the first half, finishing with another double-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 1 assist. His offensive production has been a bright spot for the Bears this session, and his defensive rebounding has always been stellar. Will Ross still looked a bit rusty, but shot three of five from three to finish with 9 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Paul Cooley finished with 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal with some nice passes and finishes inside (even though Mark took one away). Baris Durgun added 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals in the win, bringing solid defensive play, while Ted Blake was instrumental in the win with only 2 points, but 8 rebounds (4 offensive), 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. He facilitates incredibly well from the free-throw line extended and gets his team so many extra possessions with his offensive rebounding. Fill-in Rory Palmer added 5 points and 9 rebounds. Overall a strong game for the Bears, and the first win in the young career of interim head coach Sam Blomberg. It’s been reported that former head coach Jason Behrens shed a single tear upon hearing the news of Blomberg’s first career win.

Splash City just couldn’t get much going on offense in this one, going four of twenty-seven from three and generating only 5 assists as a team. Bryden Goings finished with 13 points, 1 rebound, and 1 steal, shooting an impressive three of five from deep and hitting both of his free-throw attempts. Definitely a solid game from him in the backcourt, while point guard Mike Pang also played solid with 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. He had some crafty finishes at the rim, converting two and-ones and definitely providing a steadying presence for his team. Other than that, there wasn’t much production from Splash City. Matt Wulbrecht finished with 5 points and 3 boards, Colman Shea added 4 points, 7 boards, and 1 steal, and Ben Bennet chipped in 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal. Just not a lot of cohesion among this group, though there is some talent on the roster. They will see better days.

Game 2 | Team Ahern: 54 - Pirates: 47

Team Ahern Pull Out Strong Win Against Pirates

Team Ahern have seemingly found their groove, moving to 2-1 on the season and looking like one of the top teams in this division. With the Pirates making their debut, I wasn’t sure what to expect from them, but they look to be a solid team as well. Still, Team Ahern led 25-20 at the half and maintained their lead to finish the game with a 54-47 win.

Nick Martin was impressive for Team Ahern, using his size to dominate both ends. He finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds (5 offensive), and 1 steal, finishing well inside but also showing off some Dirk-esque one-legged fadeaways in the mid-range. He will be their key player going forward. Anthony Scanzo-Masiero still needs to be added to the roster, but he is a long-range sniper, going four of ten in this one to finish with 16 points and 5 rebounds. This guy is a professional chucker, and as a chucker myself I absolutely love to see it. Does he take terrible shots? Yes. Did he hit four threes when no one else in this game hit more than one? Also yes. Shooters shoot! Ethan Collins finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds (3 offensive), and 2 blocks. He couldn’t quite get his mid-range shot going, but he still had a major impact on both ends. Eric Bauman finished with 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal, and I would love to see him look for his shot more, as he’s proven to be an efficient three-point shooter, albeit on low volume. Cam Letalien finished with 1 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists (game-high), 1 steal, and 2 blocks, showing off his versatility and distributing well to cutters and shooters, while Zach Gordon was tough inside with 3 points, 10 rebounds (4 offensive), 1 steal, and 1 block. Dave Bonaiuto hit a three to finish with 3 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal, while Doug Watford added 4 boards and 1 assist in the win. Strong performance from Team Ahern, who definitely seem to be getting more comfortable playing with each other.

The Pirates had a lot of unforced errors in this one, which I will chalk up to first game jitters. Other than that, they looked like a solid group and I expect them to be competitive. Nick Fay was getting his all game, putting up 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals on some strong takes inside. He also hit a three and shot three of four from the charity stripe, establishing himself as his team’s main offensive threat early in the season. Patrick O’Loughlin had a strong 10 point, 13 rebound double-double, plus 2 assists and 1 steal. As a guard, 13 defensive rebounds is impressive, and he also had some nice drives to the rim. Mike Cellucci added 10 points of his own to go along with 2 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals. He shot zero for five from three, but his form and the eye test tell me that he will be the main shooting threat on this team, and I expect him to start canning a few threes every game once he finds his rhythm. Ian Vieira finished with 3 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists, but he should’ve had more dimes as his team missed some easy layups. Either way, he did well driving and facilitating. Tom Banks added 2 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, and 2 blocks, while Myles O’Loughlin chipped in 2 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, and 1 block, with both guys making a strong impact on defense. A lot of bright spots here for the Pirates, who look to be a solid team but will need to show out against one of the other top teams to establish themselves as a top team instead of a middle team.

Game 3 | Plenty of Lotion: 65 - The Substitutes: 36

POL Move to 3-0 In Easy Win

Much like the first game, not much to say here. Plenty of Lotion are a top two team in this division and they just outmatched the Substitutes in every facet of the game. With a 43-14 lead at the half, this game was never close, and POL win by a decisive 65-36 final score.

Guy Pistone continues to do his thing, finishing with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. He shot five of nine from three, even though someone on the Substitutes kept yelling to let him shoot, which was just strange behavior given that they shot seven of thirty-four from deep as a team. Either way, Pistone is the clear second best player in this division, and he will continue to lead his team game after game. Drew DeBari got his three ball going, shooting three of seven to the tune of 13 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal, always solid and reliable in the backcourt as a shooter and facilitator. Anthony McDaniels added 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Yancy Brown was active with 8 points (two of four from three), 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Dan Ollquist and Garrett Vinett were in a rebounding battle with each other despite being on the same team. Ollquist finished with 4 points, 16 rebounds (4 offensive), 2 assists, and 3 steals, while Vinett came up with 3 points, 17 rebounds (5 offensive to get the edge), 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block. Even without the scoring, both guys were instrumental in the win, and absolutely dominated the glass. Solid performance from POL, who face off against Miyagi-Fang next week in the battle of the top top teams.

The Substitutes just didn’t have it tonight without Yianni Grupen. Doug Law stepped up with 14 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists, shooting four of thirteen from deep and making some nice passes from the top of the key to penetrate POL’s zone defense. Other than that, no one else scored in double figures. Matt West hit two threes for 6 points and 5 rebounds, Ryan Pitcher put up 5 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 block in a well-rounded game. Gal Hulli grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with 4 points and 2 assists, while Lexi Kimball put up 4 points and 3 boards in the loss. M. Rutherford (add him to the roster please), was active with 2 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block, but the Substitutes will need more offensive production to win some games this session.

B2 5v5 THU Week 3 Write-Ups

Lexington Steals (53) v. Furious Rim Ticklers (60)

Yeakley’s three point shooting downs the Steals as Lexington’s post work goes unrewarded

The Lexington Steals squad didn’t manage to come away with the win today, but it did seem like they found their groove scoring, or at least had a strong offensive game plan they can draw from in the future. Specifically, Scott Saveriano and James Long operated primarily down low out of the post, and were consistently able to either back their defenders down with their size and strength or operate around them with crafty spin moves. They led the team in scoring with 15 and 14 points respectively, also using their positioning down low to make passes to the outside when their offensive prowess began to draw double teams and their teammates did a nice job kicking the rock around the perimeter to find open shots. Eli Brick especially did a great job finding teammates, including a near alley-oop to Saveriano for one of his four assists. A few more makes from behind the arc would’ve made a huge difference in this contest; look for the Steals’ shooting luck to improve on open looks and an uptick in points on the board to follow.

Jeff Yeakley, in contrast, couldn’t seem to miss after his first few shots for the Furious Rim Ticklers. Yeakley ended with an incredible seven makes from three point range on fifty percent shooting, even using the threat of his deep ball to draw a foul on an attempt on his way to a team- and night-leading 26 points. Yancy Brown and Drew DeBari saw how hot he was from range and found him over and over again, dishing a combined nine assists in the process. DeBari and Brian Phillips rounded out the top trio of scoring for the Rim Ticklers, as DeBari followed Yeakley’s lead in cashing in from deep (also on fifty percent shooting) while Phillips took advantage of the gaping holes in the paint created by the team’s outside shooting to put buckets in from the paint, though he also fired away from range. Despite the team’s name, the Rim Ticklers seem to live and die on their three ball, and on this Thursday night they couldn’t have done much better.

Run and Gun (49) v. NNHS (56)

Run and Gun fall apart late as NNHS pulls even and then ahead in second half

Run and Gun had it going early, as they went into the half with a 7 point lead (up 25 to 18). The deep, well-attended roster was full of contributors, with Eduardo Deleon returning to a featured role with 23 points, including 4 of 9 shooting from deep and 3 of 4 from the charity stripe. The wily guard often took over possessions on his own, whether deciding to pull up off the dribble from behind the arc and finding the bottom of the net in critical game situations or driving along the baseline and twirling up a crafty lay-in. Stevy Alves, the team’s tallest player, was able to operate close to the basket, and the threat of his size caused NNHS to foul him repeatedly, as Alves made 5 separate trips to the line. However, Alves was unable to make them pay for fouling him, and instead bailed them out by shooting only 3 of 9 from there - a crucial 6 points to miss out on, given the final differential of 7. Robinson Tejeda was another crucial piece for the team Thursday night, as his inside scoring and three steals helped keep Run and Gun ahead early, able to match baskets with NNHS despite their prolific second half. Jeremy “Jermz” Gomes and player/coach Rafael Figuereo got themselves going from deep, as they combined for 3 makes from behind the arc on 6 attempts - look for both to shoot more going forward on this roster loaded with disparate talent. Run and Gun did, however, have some trouble with the refs due to their vocal nature, as their callouts from the bench got to the point where Anton Polanco drew a technical, leading to a couple free points for NNHS.

NNHS played a unique style of game in this league, taking only 6 threes and making none of them. Instead, the team combined for a massive 22 makes from inside, relying on driving layups and midrange jumpers to make their hay. Charlie Rao led the team in energy and in scoring, parlaying his steal, 3 blocks, and 4 offensive boards into 14 points almost entirely from within the paint, with a couple more chances just rimming out. Rao continues to come on strong for this team. Matt Wood backed Rao up in scoring, grabbing 13 points for himself as his 3 attempts from three fell short, but his touch from midrange was dialed in. Mike Gately did an excellent job at all the little things in this one once again, crashing the boards hard and skying high for rebounds and finding his teammates for a team-leading 3 assists. Spencer Schneider, the team’s third-leading scorer with 8 points, used his height to great effect on both ends, leaping over defenders as he drove to the hoop while also compiling 2 steals, 3 blocks, and 3 offensive boards. The team was down at half and searching for answers, and it appeared the halftime break provided those for NNHS, as they stormed back quickly to tie the game with 13 minutes left in the second, scoring again right after to force a Run and Gun timeout. They didn’t look back after that, never relinquishing the lead again.

Calypso North Stars (57) v. A Team Has No Name (54)

Three point shooting carries the day for North Stars once again as Evans’ work inside comes up just short in furious rally by No Name

The Calypso North Stars have been watching lots of Golden State Warriors basketball the last few years, as they made only 8 baskets from within the three point line and combined for a massive 36 attempts from deep, cashing 12 of them (33%) for over half of their 57 points. Tony Caletti once again led the way for the team in scoring with 5 of those makes on his way to 23 points, and Trevor Britton followed closely behind with 4 more to compose the entirety of his 12 points. Britton started quite slowly in terms of shooting, as he spotted up time and again from deep in the first half but was consistently unable to find the bottom of the net. But with the first half winding down and A Team Has No Name looking to take a slim 1-point lead into the break, Britton pulled up and heaved a prayer from half court that splashed in for a 2-point North Stars lead. Jake was a key piece defensively, as he grabbed a steal and the 2 of the team’s 3 blocks, crucial to providing some paint presence against an offense that wanted nothing more than to live under the basket. Also of note was that the North Stars seemed to be thrown by the court change this week, as the first half saw them turn the ball over repeatedly by shooters with their heels out of bounds along the left sideline; they cleaned this tendency up throughout the matchup.

Micah Evans (NOT also known as Michael Chroney) starred again for A Team Has No Name, driving over and over, contorting to find an angle that afforded enough space to put up a solid jumper or layup. He had 7 makes from within the paint and took 6 trips on top of that to the free throw line. He unfortunately wasn’t able to cash in on a regular enough basis for the No Name’s, making only 5 of his incredible 11 attempts, but his activity on the court in general speaks to his level of involvement in the game. Evans ended the contest with 19 points, 3 steals, a block, 3 assists, and 7 boards, including an impressive 3 on the offensive glass that he regularly efficiently finished or from which he found an open shooter. Steven McGuire led the way on the boards, cleaning up the North Stars’ misses with 11 defensive boards, and piling on 3 blocks as well as he effectively stonewalled the paint off from their advances. Eric Bradanese was firing away from deep once again, cashing 15 points including his 3 makes from deep and also grabbing a couple steals and a block. Ben Seyoum and Evans were key in the No Name’s late game push, as the North Stars clung to a relatively slim lead while Evans and Seyoum pushed relentlessly to tie the game up in regulation. The two went back and forth, with Seyoum scoring a final minute bucket to pull the team within 3 - unfortunately, the No Name’s lack of timeouts led to a desperation heave from Evans at the buzzer from midcourt that caromed harmlessly off the backboard.

Julius Swerving (43) v. BADDIES (53)

BADDIES grab first legitimate win of the season facing off against short-handed Swerving in much needed get-right game

It was an extremely egalitarian scoring performance from the BADDIES, as each player saw significant minutes in a tight 6-man rotation and everyone scored at least 5 points. Matt Roberts scored 10 solid points, coming on especially in the second half with some mid range jumpers and crafty, up and under layups that belied his size. In the first half Roberts still operated largely from the low post, but he looked to pass more than score, finding cutters and shooters on the perimeter as he surveyed the floor looking out above his opponents as he dished 4 assists. Michael Weinstein and Alan Gomez tied for the team lead in points with 12 apiece, combining for an additional 8 assists and making 4 three balls. They were an effective backcourt, with Weinstein bringing the ball up and Gomez playing as a prototypical shooting guard. It was a great team game for the team, getting their first actual win of the season over a team that’s had significant success to open the slate this year.

Meanwhile, Julius Swerving was missing each of its top 3 scorers from their win last week over the Lexington Steals, and they felt the deficit, struggling hard to score points on any sort of consistent basis. The BADDIES raced out to a massive first half lead, at one point down 13 to 2 in the opening 10 minutes. Dan Popko got the team going and was largely their only bright spot, especially early as no one else could seem to bank any points at all, as the team went into halftime down 14, with only 18 points themselves. Swerving did manage to turn things around in the second half, even winning the half by 4 points, but by that point, they had been dug into a hole too deep to climb out of. Devon Yablonski and Dave were able to supplement Popko’s 19 points with some shooting from deep of their own, with Dave contributing 10 points. Popko and Yablonski also starred on the defensive end, combining for 6 steals and 2 blocks, while Popko really did it all, coming up with 10 boards as well, including 2 on the offensive glass. Look for Julius Swerving to come back in a big way next week if they get some of their offensive stars back in action.

Wat Rats (53) v. Men’s League (72)

Men’s League blowout Wat Rats in second half after tight first half

The Wat Rats started out hot, scoring a solid 35 points in the first half and holding a slim, 2-point lead going into the break. Dylan Stockdale paced the team early, making a couple 3-pointers and dishing 3 total assists. Nicholas Goodman was similarly involved, getting 7 buckets from in close as well as grabbing 3 boards on the offensive glass, along with a couple assists. Marco Coppola once again led the team in scoring, grabbing 25 points, including 5/13 shooting from deep and adding another 3 assists. Joe Martin led the team in boards, grabbing 11 including an incredible 6 on the offensive end, really making Men’s League fight for every rebound even on their own end. In general, the Wat Rats did their best to make every inch of their collective height count, especially against Men’s League’s big man, Will Childs-Klein.

Childs-Klein, however, had a strong game on the boards himself. He grabbed 4 offensive boards and 13 on the defensive end, chipping in 8 points from in close as well. It was a balanced offensive performance from Men’s League’s 5 total players, with every one of them playing the entirety of the game - but every not one of George Schultz, Jack Anton, Childs-Klein, JP Wilkinson, or Tom Smith ever let up, never showing signs of fatigue. Wilkinson led the team in scoring, making 7 buckets in close on cutting drives and 2 threes. Smith and Schultz followed Wilkinson closely on the scoreboard, grabbing 17 and 16 points respectively. The real difference in the second half, however, was how the team locked down defensively - Men’s League grabbed 8 steals and 5 blocks, with Childs-Klein getting 4 on his own. The second half saw Men’s League ratchet up the intensity in all phases, and it showed, with the Wat Rats getting more than doubled up (39-18). Anton in particular really picked it up in the late going, finding his shooting touch on his way to grabbing all of his 10 points in the second. Look for him to shoulder a bigger scoring load for Men’s League going forward.

Markit Basketball (67) v. Skelton’s Boys (75)

Spirited second half runs from Markit Basketball not enough as they fall to Skelton’s Boys

It was a balanced scoring performance from Skelton’s Boys, as they had every player make a bucket. Erik Pettit led Skelton in shooting, getting 19 points, relying minimally on his sweet stroke from deep, where he went 3 of 4. Elijah and Jon Bassett rounded out the scoring, with 19 and 15 points each. The team as a whole had active hands and feet, jumping into passing lanes on their way to 11 steals, with Elijah getting a couple blocks as well to emphasize the defensive presence they had in the game. The final score in general belies the dominance Skelton showed throughout the game, wherein they also showed out on the glass with 12 offensive boards and clean work on their opponents misses as well. 

Meanwhile, relatively short-handed Markit Basketball (missing key pieces Cameron Gleichauf and defensive menace Victor Chang - at least for most of the game) showed heart in the second half, but ultimately did not have the firepower on either end to slow Skelton for long enough. Justin Dorosh and Peter Chang did their best to keep Markit in the game with 18 points apiece, and especially late, but their runs ended up being too little, too late, including an 8-0 run to open the second half. Last-minute arrival Victor Chang showed exactly what the team was missing, immediately imposing his size and shooting touch, grabbing an offensive board and a 3-point make in his few possessions on the court at the very end of regulation. George Phillips had the look of a difference maker throughout the game, leaping high for rebounds, leading the team in assists, and shooting 2 of 3 from deep - Phillips’ usage should tick up throughout the season. Raj Patel started the game out hot, making an early three and generally being active around the court, tying with Phillips for the team lead in boards, but his shots stopped falling over the course of the game, and Markit fell behind 38-24 at the half, in what turned out to be an insurmountable deficit.

Treys For Days (67) v. Eastie Hoops (56)

Treys make hay inside as Eastie Hoops’ shooting isn’t enough to hold off the Days’ second-half onslaught

It was a back-and-forth first half, with Eastie Hoops barely behind at the break 35 to 36. Ryan WIllis was the leading scorer for Eastie, pulling up without hesitation from beyond the arc and making 6 of 13 deep balls. Willis also showed off his athleticism on the defensive end, grabbing 3 steals and a block (a defensive line matched only by teammate Kyle Coughlin). The team was also extremely adept at getting offensive boards, getting 10, highlighted by Gary Howell-Walton and Christian Garcia, who used positioning and fight more than height or even hops. The aforementioned Coughlin was Eastie’s second-leading scorer, making 2 threes on his way to 14 points. Chisom Nnadi rounded out the top trio despite a late start, but his physical style of play led him to foul trouble as he ended the game with 5 fouls. On the bench, Nnadi bemoaned the team’s jump-shooting style of play, especially when the team’s shooting streak wore off down the stretch. 

Treys For Days brought out the defensive clamps in the second half, allowing only 21 points and cutting Eastie’s 70-point pace to a final score of 56. Dana Flood returned to the Treys to lead them in scoring with a solid 18 points. Luke Davidson made his impact felt on both end of the floor, grabbing 11 points from the paint and the free throw line and stealing the ball 4 times with his aggressive on- and off-ball defense. He also took a big hit from Nnadi to take possession on a charge just before halftime, lighting up the Treys bench and starting a swing in momentum that wouldn’t subside for the remainder of the game. Big man George Thissell was second in scoring with 12 points, banging hard down low to get himself easy looks right at the bucket. Multiple Eastie players tried to draw charges on Thissell as he backed them down with his strength, but the refs didn’t see much untoward as no whistles were heard, despite Eastie’s pleas to the contrary. Richard Kruszkowski was a solid defensive presence throughout the contest with 2 steals and 2 blocks, and even made a surprising three to the delight of his teammates. Treys For Days look like they could be the best team in the league when their key players are present - let's see if they can keep up their pace.

5v5 Draft Week 3 Write-Ups

Week 3 - Write Up The Cambridge Rats VS. The Motha Effect

The Cambridge Rats came into this matchup undefeated, but unfortunately for them, that streak would come to an end after a fantastic battle between two teams very evenly matched teams. 

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to create any real breathing room. For the Cambridge Rats, Marquis led all scorers with 12 points in the first half, Alex B chipped in 8, and Shawn Wise made his presence felt on the defensive end with 3 steals and 1 block.

The Motha Effect led by Guzzi and Hamza would go into the half leading 34-30 and were really controlling the pace of the game. The most notable accomplishment of the Motha Effect was the defense played on Marquis. They were throwing body after body at him and did the most effective job of any team this season slowing him down.

Nika, Motha, and Hamza led them in scoring with 7 points each, as they went into the half with a lot of momentum on their side. 

The Mothat Effect led by their dynamic trio of Motha, Hamza, and Guzzi dominated the pace of the game in the second half, as they’d pull away from the Cambridge Rats and never look back. As a team, they all played well and controlled the pace of the game. 
 

Marquis would finish with 18 and Alex B would score 11, but no other players would achieve double-digit scoring as their offensive struggles continue. Nevertheless, this was a fantastic team victory for The Motha Effect, as they move to 2 - 1 on the season.

Week 3 - Write Up Victorious Secret VS. Can’t Miss Keramaris

Victorious Secret notches their second victory of the season behind MVP leader Rish DiSola. Rich would go on to score 30 points and grab 15 rebounds in a game against a very tough opponent in Can’t Miss Keramaris. 

Can’t Miss Keramaris led by Eric Li (19 points) would jump out to the early lead. Eric and Mazz continue to be a very potent backcourt combination, as they managed to dictate the pace very early on in this matchup. 

Despite their offensive prowess, Victorious Secret would go into the half leading 29 - 26. With both teams jockeying for the lead I knew this game would come down to final seconds. Eric Li was more assertive than I’ve ever seen him, scoring 6 consecutive points to put Can’t Miss Keramaris up one in the closing minutes, but it wasn’t enough as this battle was destined for OT. 

Ronnie and Chris B lead the way in OT for Victorious Secret combing for the first 4 points and Can’t Miss Keramaris never recovered.

Other notable performances include Ronnies 10 points, 2 steals, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. His clutch steal helped Victorious Secret force OT. Chris B was a steady presence on both ends of the floor, as he looks to be getting better week to week, Thomas Skates also had a fantastic game despite suffering the tough loss. Thomas had 7 points to go along with 14 rebounds, 7 of which were offensive.

Coasting to another victory

Coming into this game COSTA was clearly the best team in the league.  Having won 3 straight games and just playing well on both ends of the floor.  DANIELS on the opposite side were coming off of a very close loss and win but when they faced COSTA in week 1 they looked overmatched.

With approximately 9 minutes gone from the game, Costa was already up double digits 22-11.  The game never became close and to add insult to injury, the Jamil/Dylan halftime buzzer beater combo occurred again (I believe it’s three straight weeks) with this time Jamil being the recipient of the pass from Dylan for the layup.  Costa up 38-25 at the half.

Player of the half: Dylan Costa

Second half was more of the same COSTA dominance.  I liked that DANIELS went with a lineup switch but this team is too talented to get blown out like this.  Final score 70-51 COSTA wins.

Player Grades:

Andre Jones B- I liked his aggressiveness in the second half but they needed it for a full 40 minutes.  I don’t think he played badly but his team just lost.  I added the minus to his grade for not having a complete game that his team needed.
Michael “Ghost” Fraher A I seriously can’t even pinpoint what Ghost did wrong.  He played his usual consistent game.  I think it’s up to his team to get him more looks on offense and to get more out of him in general.
Andrew Marra C got a few stats and played his role.
Cameron Daniels C his defense on Jamil wasn’t good and no assists I don’t like.  Overall though he didn’t play that bad but I’d like to see numbers in the stl and ast categories.
Adam Ellaby C- struggled with his three ball and at this point I just have to say he’s not a three point shooter.  I do like Adam’s game and think he should be the PG for this team.  He clearly can do almost everything, just had a bad shooting game which happens to everyone.  I’d also like to see him turn up his aggressiveness.  You don’t have to be a nice guy on the court.
Joseph Breda C— Ok lets start with the minuses.  The first one comes from his complete disappearance in the second half.  If I didn’t have him down as 0-2 from three I wouldn’t have even known he played.  The other minus is for asking me to add a steal to your stats.  First, you couldn’t even name the play and second your team is down by double digits.  I say all this to say I like Joe and his game and especially his energy.  Today I didn’t see it.

Jamil Ball A although he didn’t shoot the three ball well (yes I said the same exact thing before) but he played a really solid overall game.  The things I love about Jamil are his competitiveness and overall thought process of the game he plays.  Today was a feast on Cam day 🤣.
Charlie Maneval B stuffed the stat sheet.  I think he’s still capable of playing better but had a solid game.
Cameron Daniel A- was scoreless in the first half and he turned it on in the second.  Had to deduct a little from his grade for going 0fer from three.
Emmanuel Okharedia B it felt weird not hearing any trash talk from E and in the first half he was basically non existent.  In the second half though he really played well and was in his scoring bag.  He surprised me with a left hand in and out step back jumper that bounced in.
Dylan Costa B I feel like I’m grading him too high because I like him.  He went scoreless in the second half and to my surprise didn’t have any offensive rebounds but still had great dreb numbers and led the team in asts.
Dan Waldman B- I feel like 2 of his 4 pts was a nifty layup and he did a good job getting some stats across the board but I have to add the minus to your grade for the 0fer from three and the free throw line.
 

Player of the game: Jamil Ball no lengthy words just a great job playing again.

Week 2 - Platano Power VS. Nair

Platano Power had their full team in attendance for the first team this season, so I came into this matchup expecting big things, but team Nair had an entirely different game plan in mind. Led by DTO (18 points) and Ruff (13 points) Team Nair got off to a scorching start and very quickly jumped out to an 11-point lead (25 - 14) halfway through the first half. Ruff and DTO combined for 6 threes in the first half and Platano Power didn’t really have a counter.

Tim’s 7 points and Jorge’s 10 points paced Platano Power in the first half. No one else on their team really developed any rhythm offensively. Team Nair would go into the half with a double-digit lead, in a game that was trending towards a blowout.

In the second half, led by Tim Roberts and 8 second-half points by Chris Agresti Platano Power mounted an epic comeback to pull within 3 (52 - 49) with 9 minutes left in the second half. Most teams would start to get agitated, but Ruff got pissed off and more vocal than he had been all game. “I don’t know what yall excited about, this game is already over,” the grizzly vet said shouted with absolute conviction.

That’s when the Nick Lynch show started. After only scoring 5 points in the entire first half, Nick was absolutely dominant in the second half and finished with 23 points and grabbed 19 boards. Team Nair has continued to thrive despite missing, arguably the best player in the entire league. I can’t wait to see this team at full capacity. 

Platano Power
Jorge Morel (B+) - Jorge did a fantastic job against Nick Lynch. Despite his displeasure with the officiating. 16 points and 8 rebounds are fantastic numbers, but we all know Jorge is capable of more.
Alan Orellana (B-) - 11 points and 8 rebounds are solid, but the stats that jump out to me are 0 steals and 1 assist. Maybe I’m biased, but I consider AO to be one of the best guards in this league and I know he has another gear.
Neil Aggarwal (B) - Neil’s 4 points and 6 rebounds were solid contributions, but I would love to see Neil play much more aggressively on both ends of the court. I know this team has no shortage of talented guards, but I have no doubt he can be highly effective within the team offense.
Tim Roberts (A) - Led all scorers with 22 and shot the three ball well. Tim continues to be one of the top scorers in the league and makes it look effortless.
Chris Agresti (A) - Chris played with a great deal of effort, energy, and toughness. Chris made things extremely difficult for Nick in the post and with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists, his stat line is a clear indication of the difference he made in this game.
Rob Lunder (C-) - I love Rob, but this was not his best game. Mostly, because he didn’t pay very much. (edited)

Nair
Nick Lynch (A-) - The big dawg struggled from three, but still scored 23 points and grabbed 19 boards. Did I mention he had 3 steals and a monster block?
Damian Ruff (A+) - Ruff gets an A for overall play and an A+ for banter/shit-talking. Only Ruff would say “This game is already over” with 9 minutes left in the second half and a three-point lead. Needless to say, he wasn’t wrong, as they went on to win by 7.
DTO (A) - Was second on the team in scoring with 21, as his impressive season continues. He helped them jump out to the early lead and was a huge part of this victory.
Ben Mitchell (B) - Per usual, Ben was solid and steady for them on both ends of the court. He didn’t contribute a bunch, but he also didn’t do anything to hurt them.
Patrick Blaikie (C+) - Patrick went 2 for 7 from three. His breakout game is more than overdue, if pickup was any indication I wouldn’t want to be the team playing Nair next. Wait, we are the team playing them next

Week 2 - Platano Power VS. Stull Here

For the second consecutive week, Stull Here gets an opponent on their second of back-to-back games. Clearly, David Pendergast has an in with the commish, nevertheless, this game would be the highest-scoring affair of the morning as absolutely no defensive was played. Not a single block was registered and Platano Power didn’t even register a steal.

Getting to the action, David Pendergast had 28 points at the half and I was certain he was destined for a 50-piece. Rak, Quinlin, and DP dominated Platano Power in transition and dictated the pace of the game from the tip. Rak (11 points) and Devin (13) would both score double-digits in the first half. AO was the only player on Platano Power to score double-digits in the first half finishing with 13.

Despite not playing their best ball, Platano Power would go into the half down 11 (53 - 42). This game was still very much within reach. In the second half, Devin Quinlin (23 points) got it going for Stull Here and Platano Power was never able to recover. Stull Here would go on to win 96 - 71 as they move to 2 - 1 in this very early season.

Jorge Morel (B-) - In back-to-back games, Jorge had by far the toughest matchups having to guard Nick Lynch and then David Pendergast. Jorgre struggled mightly offensively, but I can’t imagine it’s easy being the lone big man on the squad. The B- is because I know Jorge is way better than the way he played in this game and I look forward to seeing him rebound in their re-match against Stull Here on June 3rd.
Alan Orellana (A-) - Alan led the team in scoring with 22 points and 9 rebounds. His play really kept the game semi-interesting. I would have loved to see Alan a bit more aggressive defensively, but the second of back-to-back is always the hardest!
Neil Aggarwal (A) - 10 points and 6 rebounds were both highs for Neil on the season. Like always, he left it all on the court. I couldn’t ask for more.
Tim Roberts (B+) - Tim was second on the team with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Despite being down a lot early, he never stopped fighting.
Chris Agresti (B+) - Chris played well defensively and scored within the flow of the offense. When Chris is on the floor they really seem to play better.
Rob Lunder (B+) - Rob played much better in the second game scoring 6 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. I’d love to see him play more aggressively on both ends of the court. (edited)

Stull Here
Steve Rakusin (A+) - Steve was as dominant as I’ve seen him. 18 points and 25 rebounds to go along with 5 assists! Fantastic effort on both ends of the court and was the biggest difference in this matchup against Platano Power.
Devin Quinlin (B+) - Struggled early on with his shot, but would find his groove in the second half scoring an impressive 23 points. Despite his shooting struggles, he excelled defensively and found his teammates for easy looks in transition. All-in-all fantastic game for the # 2 pick in the draft.
David Pendergast (A+) - DP was a man amongst boys out there. 46 points, 2 steals, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists. There is no doubt who the player of this game was.
Christopher Stull (B+) - Stull got off to a slow start, but his three treys were backbreakers and really killed any momentum Platano Power was building. He also grabbed 2 rebounds and dished out 2 assists.

Kenny Tricks 5 Weeks into giving him Treats after dominating display

Going in, my expectations for this game were very low. 5 Weeks and Counting had been blown out every game, while Trick or Treat is the clear top team in the league. Jamil being out further lowered my expectations and made me regret not making the line higher than the 19.5 I set it at. To the action!

The start of the game was interesting as 5 Weeks and Counting came out flying. Troy and Maneval were active on both ends, forcing turnovers and knocking down a few shots early, while Trick or Treat was sluggish. Eventually they got the pick and role game going with Sam and Mike, but 5 Weeks held the lead 12-8 after the first five minutes. A Troy steal and Maneval 3 would push the lead to 6 at 17-11 and Guns would follow with a three to make it 20-13! Harry was definitely not pleased at this point, but I wasn’t sure how sustainable this was as 5 Weeks were hitting everything, while Trick or Treat was missing wide open shots (or just throwing the ball away). Things were due to flip soon and they did almost immediately as Trick or Treat ripped off a quick 7-0 run to tie it up at 20. Stat was getting whatever he wanted in the paint (still no guarantee he’d finished it) and Weinstein couldn’t miss. 

Guns stopped the run with a crazy put back while falling behind the hoop and out of bounds. I’m not sure he knew much about it, but it was a very impressive play. Things remained level as we finished up the first quarter of the game as we sat at 25-25 after 10 minutes. As you can see, defense was optional at this point and for as hard as 5 weeks was working, I was skeptical they could keep up that effort for the entire game. It seemed a run was coming for Trick or Treat and it started after a Harry dime led to an easy bucket. Weinstein would add a three, which was good because Pollock was throwing up bricks from deep. With six minutes left Harry’s team led 38-28 and then Kenny was unleashed. Over the rest of the half he’d hit three threes to push the lead, yet he couldn’t make a wide open layup in transition. One person who could make layups during this time was Big Guns who had two really impressive right-handed finishes. Guns and the rest of 5 weeks were working hard, but Trick or Treat just had far too many weapons and at half they found themselves down 54-34. Everyone but Harry (he wasn’t shooting at all) was scoring for Trick or Treat, led by Weinstein with 21 and Pollock with 14. Meanwhile, 5 weeks was lead by Maneval with 16 and Guns with 9.

The second half was more or less a scrimmage with both teams trying on offense and providing limited resistance on defense. Harry’s team was putting on a passing clinic with the ball flying around and leading to easy shots on pretty much every possession. Sam finally hit a three in this period and Kenny continued to go off. 5 Weeks meanwhile was fatigued and started turning the ball over frequently. This led to more easy buckets for Trick or Treat as they started to run up the score. Guns and co fought hard in the second half as he hit a really nice setback three, but it wasn’t enough as Trick or Treat walked away with a 94-55 win.

Pollock B: Nice game, but struggled from three

Weinstein A: Led the team in scoring and was able to do pretty much whatever he wanted.

Kenny A+: Awesome game even with several blown layups. A treat to watch.

Stat B: Dominated the glass, but still forces a few too many shots for my liking and doesn’t finish efficiently.

Harry B: Kept the ball moving and rebounded well.

5 Weeks

Maneval A-: 23 points on efficient shooting from deep, but would have liked to see a little more activity on the glass and getting others involved.

Guns A: Great game from Tommy on both ends. Had four steals and eight boards and added 14 points and showed off a nice range of moves to get those points.

Troy B: Quiet second half, but worked hard throughout.

Alan C: Struggled with his shot, but passed the ball well.

The second game of the evening was the toilet bowl championship between Ian's Gray Matters and Calderan's Danner-18. Both these teams looked quite awful through two weeks, although Danner-18 had a better excuse than Ian's with Casey missing their second game. Casey, was there this week as was everyone else (for a time). Taha aka the electric one was out for Gray Matters. TO THE ACTION!

Gray Matters came out like a team thirsty for victory in this one, sprinting out to a 20-3 lead over Danner-18. Everyone was contributing to start off this half, Koller had 12 points, Ian had 8, Lamaar returned to score 5 and Issac plus Ian had three steals apiece. What a start for a team that really needs a win. They were really bringing the energy out there and it got them a big lead.

On the other end of the floor, Danner-18 was out to lunch the first 10 minutes of the game. Falling down double digits so early to a bad offense isn't a good thing. They looked out to lunch a game that they really needed too. What the hell were they doing? Then Cavano got hurt, falling hard to the ground doing something Cavano like, forcing him out of the game. Not great for a team that relies on its stars to get shit done. Cavano did some up to me as he was leaving and guaranteed victory. Odd thing for a man to say leaving the gym and his team to fend for themselves.

HOWEVER, the game started to turn a bit as Danner-18 went on a 18-9 run to close the half behind Chaos Casey, who was launching the ball at will and flying all over court with no real plan in mind. Danner-18 went into the half trailing 29-21 with the hopes they could ride Casey to a victory. Could they? BACK TO THE ACTION!

Chaos Casey returned in the second half, securing 8 offensive rebounds and a whole bunch of rebounds on the defensive end too. Obviously, Ian learned nothing from our game plan on Mondays last season to assign someone to box out Casey at all times.

Of course, he doesn't have me on this team. Anyways, Casey shot like shit, not surprising, but the second and third and fourth chances he got his team were starting to pay off. Calderan joined the game, scoring 18 second half points after puking on himself in the first half. Calderan also got frisky out there, picking up four fouls and technical! He also started chirping at Koller about being a man. I will say this, all you guards are cheap fucks down low and push/pull/hold all the time. Nonetheless, THIS IS A MEN'S LEAGUE BABY and the winds of change in this game's momentum were blowing.

After a 'good for them?' first half, Gray Matters reverted back to struggling mightily on offense. They didn't hit a three in the entire second half. Ian didn't score and Issac/Lamaar only made 3 fgs the rest of the way. I mean what can you say about this offense? No one can handle the ball consistently, no one can shoot consistently and therefore no one can really score consistently.

Down the stretch Gray Matters finally gave up the lead after a Calderan free throw and then Casey a bucket gave them a 2-point lead. Then somehow Ryan Glynn ended up with the ball on the ground and called a timeout his team didn't have. Therefore proving forever he shouldn't be in charge of timeouts. Koller tied the game from the line after the T, but Glynn redeemed himself okie doking Koller for a bucket, but Koller answered for 2. After some other plays recorded in discord Danner-18 had the ball up 2 and Casey did something stupid, got his shit thrown back in his face and lost the ball for his team. Koller found Gray for 2, Calderan missed one up close, Gray Matters got the ball and ran the same play that tied the game, but this time Calderan threw Gray's shit. Off to OT we go!

Gray Matters won the tip in OT, but couldn't convert and were forced to play from behind after a Calderan bucket gave Danner-18 the lead. After a Koller 1-2 from the line, Casey scored a 2 and Glynn got a board and was fouled. He made his free throws and Koller answered with a 2, then Glynn split a pair. Lamaar would hit a huge three to make it a one point game, Calderan went to the line and made the first, but the second got rebounded by Casey. Ben "Casey" Simmons went to the line and bricked both free throws. Man, does this guy suck at the free throw line. He didn't use to be this bad. Gray Matters had the ball down 2, they got the ball to Koller who dribbled around until he could attempt a 3 and it was off. 64-62 Final.

Another horrific loss for Ian's team and a great win for Danner-18 to overshadow Casey being the worst free throw shooter of all-time.

Grades:

Koller A; Now this what an "A" effort looks like when your team is counting on you to consistently get buckets, not disappear from half to half.
Ian C: Ian looked quite good early, but speaking of disappearing Ian did his own in the second half and OT. This team really needs Ian's best from half to half as a captain and player.
Lamaar C+: A mixed bag from Lamaar, he hit a big shot, but fouled trouble hurt his night.
Issac B-: His best game so far, but he really needs to rebound on this team. What's that height for?
Gray B: Gray made some big plays out there, but he really needs to make his threes. Again, it isn't his fault he's been thrusted into a huge role.

Danner-18

Casey A-: This an 'A+' game, but his outrageously bad shooting brings him down.
Cavano A+: Sees into the future like no man.
Calderan A: Hit some really big shots and made a game saving block.
Marcellus D: I need one bucket or a block or a fight with an opposing player.
Danner C+: I'm sure Danner made some hustle players out there.
Glynn B-: Glynn was a mixed bag of chaos like Casey.

Nothing Great without The Great One

Our last game of the evening featured an AJ and Joel less Counselors taking on the Great Clasby without the Great One. This didn't seem like a promising end to the evening for our games, but we played the game anyway. TO THE ACTION!

Any time a Noah team knows it's in peril means they're going to be chucking 3s relentlessly for 40 minutes, because Noah has his built in excuse. This game was no different in the first half, with the Counselors shooting 22 3-point shots. They were able to hit 7, all from Noah and Jack, who the team welcomed back this week. Those 7 made 3s were 5 more than the amount of 2s they made in the half, so these guys fit in perfectly with today's NBA.

On the other side of the court The Great Clasby was throwing up a whole lot of trash. They went 0-9 from deep in the first half and looked about awful as one can in a half against weak competition. Scroggins, Clasby and Angry Ian combined for all the scoring in this half, plus the next one and OT. That tells me the ball wasn't moving if Robel and Silva didn't get on the board. 

They moved the ball well last week in victory, but perhaps they thought the ball movement played no role in their victory.  

The Counselors went into the half up 25-21. My feelings were this lead wouldn't last and Scroggins would turn it on, but I've been wrong once before (just once!). 

The second half began much like the first of GC, they couldn't hit a shot to save their lives. Scroggins and Robel were the only ones to attempt a 3 in the second half/OT. I don't know what's going on with this team's offense, but it sucks. I thought this would be a good game for them to build some momentum, but boy was I wrong. There wasn't one positive for these guys in this game. 

The score fluctuated a bit in the second half, neither team was pulling away by any means. That's when Jack got hurt on a 3-point jumper that Robel was trying to contest. Zaza Pachulla thought it was perfect defense, but others might be disagree. Obviously, Robel didn't do it on purpose and now the Counselors needed a guy. That's when the King stepped off his throne to play and Robel did the scoring. 

It was a pretty ugly game from there, I remember Bret hitting a huge 3 to get the lead to 5 or maybe a little more. Then Scroggins turned it up a bit and got some lay-ups. Eventually, the game was tied and I drove on Silva, using my new move, I went right up into his arms. There was no call and we went to OT! 

Noah hit a big 3 in OT and Bret made a nice short jumper or lay-up. We got into free throw territory, but I missed a front end and Bret missed one. The Great Clasby got within 2 and went for the win at the buzzer, but Angry Ian's shot fell off.

A+: Any time you get a win against another team without your two best players, then your third best, you deserve an A+.

F-: No positives from any player on this team and as a team a collective awful performance. F---------

2 guys and a Cam

Coming into the night this was my game of the evening between two contending teams. Both coming into the game 2-0, both coming off impressive wins. Finally, a game wasn't ruined by absences, everyone was there. TO THE ACTION!

The Young Bucks came out hot behind their 3 headed monster of Lynch-Miller-Cam. Apparently. Civale didn't get the memo that Lynch was a shooter and even if we did, God knows he wouldn't have done anything about it. Lynch, would hit four three pointners in the first half, going 4 for 7. Cam added 10 points of his own, while Miller clocked in at 11. No one else on the team scored in the first half for the Young Bucks, which tells me Civale's team did a poor job noticing what was happening. Again, not surprising with a Civale led team.

On the other end of the floor, MacDonald notched 8 first half assists for his team. I was beginning to wonder though if maybe this wasn't a good thing, because James was the only person who registered an assist. You have to wonder if MacDonald bogarting the entire offense is a good thing, when it leads to other guys going invisible. James did score 8 first half points. Young Bucks went into the half up 39-33. I thought this game could go either way. I expected MacDonald to turn up the scoring. BACK TO THE ACTION!

MacDonald, would step up his scoring in the second half, going bonkers for 20 second half points. He even flirted with a quadruple-double, but one other person registered a second field goal. Again, I have to wonder if this Luka like offense is good for the team as a whole. They were trailing this whole game.

Meanwhile, this was Cam's best game of his CAC career, even if he continues to blow free throws. Cam had 12 second half points, hitting a three and a bunch of 2s. Miller continues to be a force down low, scoring 13 second half points. By the time season ends Miller is going to have a whole lot of free throw attempts. He's a magnet for contact in this league.

Lynch, kind of disappeared though, only scoring 4 points this half. He still refuses to ever enter the post, which I guess is a big thank you to the rest of the league. The Young Bucks just kept MOOM at a distance in this game. The deciding blow was when DTO finally made a FG for the supporting cast. It was a huge 3 that was pretty much the dagger in the game. Everyone, but Cam hit their free throws and that was all she wrote. Another huge win for the Young Bucks, while MOOM needs some answers.

Grades

Miller A-: Another good game, but his shot was off from deep. Lynch: B+: Great first half, but what happened in the second half and why can't I get any post-ups?
Cam A: He'd get a plus if he could make a free throw.
DTO C+: Big three late gets him a plus, but only one made FG? Gross. He needs to make an impact for his team.
Landy C-: I have no memories of anything he did in this game. Was he there?
Bauman C: Notched 2 assists, but I need a make too.

MOOM

MacDonald A-: Hard to argue with the numbers, but where's my defense?
James C+: Listen, James was a monster on the boards, but no second half FGs? Does James only play the first half to score?
Civale A: 7 threes is above board, HOWEVER does this guy ever rebound or do anything but stand on the 3-point line? Just a waste of a big body. Make an effort out there.
Hanks D: Sucked again, but apparently did better yesterday. So good for him.
Ottomatic C: No Ottomatic buckets, boooooooo.

6. 5 weeks and counting:

Somehow this team gets to 6th because they haven’t had a chance to win anything. I feel confident in saying at full strength they’re better the teams below them. They might be better with just 5 too.

5. Danner-18:

Huge win for these guys tonight even with Cavano getting hurt. Casey is definitely good enough to Will his team past the ones blow them as tonight provided. GIANT GAP These teams can win it tier:

4. MOOM

Tough loss for these guys tonight, but they’re still clearly better than the ones below them.

3. Counselors

You can argue they still belong in the 2 spot, but I’m putting them here. Big win for them tonight, you’re welcome. Although, I’d argue it had move to do with the awful play of their opponents. Nonetheless, they’re quite good at full strength.

2. Young Bucks

Huge win for these guys tonight too. They beat a full strength title contender. Their supporting cast has questions though. No one besides the top 3 made a FG tonight.

B2 5v5 THU Week 3 Write-Ups

WEEK 3 Write-ups by ALEXA S.

Game 1 - Clever Trevors (57) vs Rock Lobsters (29)

Clever Trevors showed up with a whole team effort with everyone getting involved in the win. CT never trailed in this game and put away the Rock Lobsters from the jump. Early in the 1st half, CT hit 3 consecutive three pointers to pad a comfortable lead into halftime 27-7. Trevor B. had 3 triples in the game finishing with 12 points along with 4 rebounds and 3 dimes. Tony C. contributed 14, 4, 4 assists and 2 steals. Besides dominating as a team from outside the arc, CT also had a clear size advantage in the post. Luke R. and Danny H. made their presence known in the paint and cleaned up the boards. Luke R. had 11 rebounds, including 5 offensive and Danny H. grabbed 9 boards and 9 points to match. Rock Lobsters got it going offensively in the second but it wasn’t enough to overcome their slow start. Camen P. had a double-double going for 13 and 11 with 3 steals.

Game 2- Seal Team 69 (72) vs Furious Rim Ticklers (42)

The second game of the night proved to be another blow out with the Seal Team sealing the win early on. They would take a commanding 20-1 lead which was fueled by scoring 15 unanswered points. Two players on the Seal Team were especially dominant all game long, with Jack S. having a team leading 25 points with 11 rebounds and Caleb G. adding 19, 17 and 6 assists. As a team, they shot well from deep making 10 3’s and converting sloppy plays by the other team into easy transition points. The Furious Rim Ticklers really struggled to make shots with their first field goal only being made after 14 minutes of play. Jeff Y. was jacking up lots of three’s early on but they started dropping in the second making 5/15 (33%). He finished with 19 points and was the only double digit scorer for the Furious Rim Ticklers as they ended losing by 30.

Game 3 – World Ball (71) vs Terminator (72)

This was by far the most entertaining and heated match up of the night that came down to the wire. Remy B. got off to a great start for World Ball by knocking down shots early and helping this team maintain the lead for the entire first half. Remy would go on to score a game leading 25 points. Dylan C. was also active throughout the game converting his free throws and ended up only missing one, shooting 90% (10/11) on FT and tallying 20 points total. The game remained close through the end of the 1st with Fozan S. on Terminators keeping defenders on their toes with his speed and shiftiness as well as knocking down jumpers. Carl B. also helped keep the game close for the Terminators with 18 points and 4 steals. The Terminators were able to keep themselves close, only being down 44-37 at the half.

 Coming right out of halftime, Fozan S. hit a 3 point shot to get them only down 4, but World Ball would continue to apply the pressure and hit shots going up by as much as 12. Terminators would slowly chip away and showed lots of grit and tenacity to stay in the game. With less than 2 minutes to go, they were only down one point after clutch plays by Carl B. with a steal for a wide open layup and a clutch 3 following that. After a pair of made three throws by Dylan C. on World Ball, the Terminators were down by 2 with 30 seconds left. In search of a bucket, they went to Fozan S. who drove hard to the hoop and was hacked. He only managed to convert one FT, but somehow the Terminators secured the offensive rebound and Fozan was the hero of the night for this team hitting the game winner with a last second pull up jumper to go up 72-71! His big night ended with 23 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals.

Game 4 – A Team Has No Name (70) vs. Lexington Steals (56)

This game was neck in neck until the 2nd half where the Lexington Steals could simply not keep up with the other teams shooting and great ball movement. Thomas F. on Lexington Steals scored the team’s first 7 points and James L. took advantage of his matchups in the post getting great looks. They both had 16 points in the contest. Their efforts kept the Steals in the game going into halftime as they were down by a mere 5 points. A Team Has No Name didn’t take long to put away their opponent, with Navid S. catching fire from deep with 5 treys to end up 17 points, 7 boards and 2 assists. Micah E. also had a solid game with finishing well around the rim with 14, 4 and 5 assists. Mike C. chipped in 12, 6 boards and 3 dimes. A Team Has No Name would go on to win the game handedly by a 14 point marg

B1 5v5 TUE Week 3 Write-Ups

WEEK 3 BY LAMARR

Game 1: Mens league (69) - Treys 4 Days (58)

Welcome back to week 3 of the season which has been pretty competitive up to this point of he season. This week was really surprising with some results that I didn't see coming. Starting with the first game of the night with Mens League getting an eleven point win over Treys 4 days. The first half of this game was the definition of a back and forth game, with no team gaining a lead over 5 points. Both teams traded buckets from the beginning of the half, with Mens league being led by PG Phil Mcgloin who was a huge factor all night. With his penetration, mid range game and ability to get to the line, he was a handful to deal with. Trey 4 Days was having a really difficult time from the field, missing some really open looks that they usually knock down. Big man and MVP candidate Kevin Lefrancis was his typical rebounding machine, but this game Men's League fouled and forced him to the line. This was probably a big reason for there win, as LaFrancis went 3-11 in the first half from the line. Just happened to be one of the days for the big man. But back up big George Thissel came off the bench and gave T4Ds a huge boost. Especially with his rebounding. But overall as a team, T4Ds mainly just struggled to hit the shots they were hitting in the first two weeks. Mensleague on the other hand was extremely efficient on the offensive end, with every player scoring at least a bucket in the first half. What kept Trey 4 days in the game was the offensive rebounding. 8 in the first half as a team, which allowed them to stick around.. The halftime score was 34-34 after a big 3 by Wes Scholl tied the game. 

Second half couldn't have started better for Men's League, with McGloin scoring 5 quick points and then hitting T. Smith for a nice 3 to bring the lead to 8 two minutes in. They didn't look back from that point forward. Mcgloin controlled the game and basically did whatever he wanted. He ended the game with an amazing 11 for 11 from the free throw stripe. Along with some timely buckets from Smith and forward JP Wilkinson, the game was theirs to lose. Trey 4 Days stayed as close as they could by continuing to get to the line, but the miss just kept coming. They ended the game going 15 for 30 from the free throw line. Which basically killed there chances. The game ended with Mens league taking it 69-58. 

MVP: Phil Mcgloin (27 points, 6 rbs, 6 ast)

 

Game 2: Big Phil from the hill and team (72) - Terminator 2 (60)

I can't lie, I thought that this was going to be a good match up for Terminator but boy was I wrong. Big Phils squad came out on a mission this week to get that first W of the season, Beating T2 with a convincing 12 point win. Big Phil came out and looked like an entire new team with the ball movement, they really shared the ball from the beginning of the ame that helped them get out to an early 18-10 lead. PG Hernon Perdomo was really running the show for BIg Phil and the team, his passes led to forward Jonathan Freund (who scored 8 quick buckets) and others. That really got the team going and feeling confident. Scott Jensen and Thomas Bissel were there typical selves, crashing the boards and getting some easy looks. But as a team from three, this team really really struggled. They were 4-15 from the 3 point line in the first half, something we aren't accustomed to seeing. If they made even a few of those threes the game would be much different. But instead T2 went into the half down 36-20, Big Phils squad also picked up 5 team steals in the first half that led to some easy transition buckets. But never count on the Terminator. 

Second half was a completely different team for T2, they came out much more aggressive and started to push the pace, outrunning the bigger Big Phil squad. This helped to some easy baskets but still missing threes and Nick Roseetii grabbing two offensive rebounds and put backs kept for Big Phil kept the lead at 12 with 17:00 to go in the game. Two quick 3s by Freund and Concannon and I thought that would be the game, but a 14-5 run by T2 got them right into the game. Led by combo guard Carl Bunge, who had a steal and block on back 2 back possessions along with some big shots, gave his team the confidence they needed. They also started to knock down the 3 ball. Bissell knocked down three 3s under the 7:00 mark and BIg Phils squad finally got cold from the field, next thing you know the score was only 62-58, T2 down by 4. At this point I was thinking “Yeah Terminator 2 gonna make this incredible comeback” but that wasn't the case. Again T2 couldn't find their touch from 3, and with Nick Rosseti and Concanon knocking down everything they put up in the half the game was officially over. BIg Phil from the Hill and team wound up with the win, 72-60. Terminator 2 shot a horrendous 8-38 from the three point line, but dont expect that to be the case for the rest of the season.

Game 3: Mid Range Magic (63) 0 FCHWPO (45)

This was another big win that I didn't see coming into the week. Not because MId Range does not have the talent, but the size of FCHWPO would be a lot of Mid range to handle. Boy was I wrong. Mid Range took advantage of FCHWPO not having there 3 best players, and easily destroyed there opponent 63-45. Even if FCHW had its full roster, the way Mid range played im not sure it would have even mattered. First half was a pretty close game with no team really gaining any big lead. Mid range was their typical attacking selves, getting to the line and attacking the rim. The Zahner brothers were especially aggressive with both grabbing multiple offensive rebounds and knocking down mid range jumpers. With no rim protector from FCHW, mid range use this game plan over and over. FCHWPO stayed right there with MId range tho, with 2 big threes by guard Meech Ramirez and strong drives by AIden Cyr, FCHW was in position to take the lead. But two big offensive rebounds and putbacks by big Man Clifford Bouchereau kept the lead at a reasonable distance going into the half, with MId Range up 30-24 at the half.

Second Half started off similar to the first half, mid range being aggressive and FCHW making timely baskets to stay in striking distance. BIg Man Bouchereau was having none of that thought. He really turned it up in the second half, FCHW couldn't score in the paint as long as big cliff was roaming around. Plus the 3 ball not falling for them, and things got pretty ugly pretty quick for FCHWPO. Mid Range stayed on the gas, hit 6 second half 3s to their opponents 1, and only gave up a total of 15 points the entire second half of the game. Stifling defense led by Cam Kelley and Bouchereau. But let's not forget about the big second half for 6 man Sean Mahoney, who hit 2 big threes and added 6 rebounds in the second half of the game.. Real great team performance by Mid Range, and ended up getting the blowout win with a score of 63-45. MId Range had 5 different players score in double figures.

WEEK 3 WRITE-UPS

Week 3 Game 1 Super VS Poor

Frongi dives in right away to kick us off, and Oully followed his lead $ a 3, Rosi TD ass to Frongi after steal, then Frongi another lay up sheesh it was an ugly 11-0.Ini goes 1-2 to finanly get them on the board. Mulv goes 2-2 to keep the pressure 13-1. Matty gets a 3 to go thank god! Ini scoop shot, Mazone drives in , Ini 1-2 again, but Oully 3 brakes the run 16-9. Amazon filthy lefty drive, but Oully going step for step wih and 1 19-11. Ini bank shot.19-13. Kap hustle elads to Mulv lay in, then Mulv in the right place at the right time for 2 23-13. Stull 3 ball splash alert, than Keith Obrd put in 26-18. Kap zooms in, but Mazone Trey makes it 28-21. Amazon $ another trey, and another 28-27 we got ball game baby! Frongi calms things with cut, but Ini hook keeps pace. Oily feeling it gets a 3, but Mazone in his bag gets the lefty lay in. Rosi finally in on the act with a J, Frongi running well gets another deuce, but that Ini hook was falling, Frongi just gashing them with another running hoop, then a Kapadon steal 3 ball magic it was a crazy 42-33 at the break. 

Ini grown man lay in, Keith grown man lay in it was 42-37. Mulv brakes mini run with lay in. Mazone sneaky down the base line. Mulv, and smooth Matty J trade 3’s, but Keith gets floater 47-44. Puller big 3 to stretch the lead 50-44. Stull crafty to the line gets 1-2, Mulv would get a J, but Keith sees a 3 go through 52-50. Kap strong righty drive, but Stull not taking no shit $ 3 54-53 what a game! Kap answers with veteran 3 , but Mazone obrd converts, then Matty nice cut we were knotted at 57 all! Mulv obrd leads to big Rosi 3, than Rosi 3 again , after some fts Matty would get a 3 to go making it 64-61. Poor had good 1 n 1 ft chances but kept missing them, and that was huge as Rosi really got going down te stretch, Pulley would add a 3 and that was good night Irene. 77-69 Super stays unbeaten

Rosi-B-) Took him way to long to get going, and it almost cost them. As alway he knew when to turn it on and and got out of there with the W. 
Oully-A- Vintage Oully here, he was the efficient assassin we all love. 
Frongi-B+- Run , run, run he knows how to keep pressure on the D, and it gave great results. 
Mulv-B- Solid day, hustled hard , and made an 2nd half impact 
Kap-B+-He’ssssssss back. Much more impactul, getting swipes/3’s,and dimes. 

Poor

Matty-B-) Dude can shoot it, and its beatuful. But needs to get out on shooters more. 
Stull-A-) Really likes his fight/actvity out there.
Ini-B+- Scored the rock well, still not the most efficient from the line. 
Mazone-A-Holy moly this kid is a baller, would have got the A+ with a win. Left drives, just filthy 
Keith-B- Came late but still filled up the stat sheet, rebound excellently maybe one to many 3 down the stretch.

Game 2: Mulholland Drive vs. FTR

ReKAP:

We had a good one in game 2, featuring Mulholland Drive taking on FTR. Houston was out for MD, missing his second straight game, while FTR was fully staffed with Dru making his season debut. It was tight to start, with both teams exchanging baskets. Chas was looking to be more assertive, hitting an early 3 and delivering a number of bellowing screams that hurt my ears. JDM and Harding were exchanging blows as expected and DP delivered a nasty patented drive and spin on LeBlanc. Welcome to the spin cycle LeBlowby! FTR led 15-13 after the first 10 minutes of play.

That’s when it got ugly for FTR. MD ripped off a 22-6 run to close out the final 10 minutes of the first half. Their offense looked much improved, with JMul providing a nice facilitator role. He was moving the ball well and while he didn’t rack up a lot of assists, he did provide a number of “hockey” assists. The assault resulted in a 35-21 MD halftime lead.

FTR has a bunch of guys that can play though, and Harry’s halftime speech must have done something to inspire his team. FTR opened the second half with a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to 5. Harding led the charge as usual with some long balls and nice drives to the cup. He looked to be more assertive out of the intermission and it paid dividends. Vladi got in the act as well after a quiet first half and just like that we had a ball game on our hands!

After a timeout, Chas would calm the troops though MD was able to weather the storm. A LeBlanc 3 would push the lead back to 9 and MD remained pretty much in control for the rest of the game. FTR battled their asses off but every time they seemed to get closer, MD had an answer. I am not going to speak on the “self-pass” play by JDM because it was the right call, but I know FTR will be pointing to that play as a pivotal moment late in the game.

Down the stretch JDM and LeBlanc were lethal from the free throw line combining to go 15/16 in the game. Not too shabby! These two would end up combining for 50 points and ultimately it was too much for FTR to overcome. MD comes away with a very solid win, 70-61.

Grades:
JDM (A): JDM was fantastic in this one. He posted a strong 30 point, 10 rebound double double. No offensive rebounds is kinda shocking but he still balled out and made a number of “OMG” shots.
LeBlanc (A-): LeBlanc is still trying to figure out the long ball this season, but he was excellent everywhere else. Floor generaled the game well and made all of his free throws.
JMul (B+): He didn’t take a single 3! He did however, play a really good game despite scoring only 2 points. He was basically the Draymond Green of this team. I don’t know if that’s a compliment or not. He did all the little things in this one really well.
Chas (B+): Pretty solid Chas game here. He was much more assertive on offense as Vladi was giving him ZERO respect on his shot. He ended up going 2/7 from deep but they were all good looks. A solid effort here.
Craig (A-): Craig didn’t get mentioned above, but he did play a really solid game. He went 1/2 from deep and had some nice 2-point buckets. This was definitely one of Craig’s best efforts of the season.

Vladi (C+): Kind of a mixed bag for Vladi. He didn’t shoot that well from deep, but he did make some timely ones. The 3 steals were nice. I am used to more dimes from Vladi but maybe we can blame his teammates for missing shots?
Harding (B): Expectations are high for this guy so I am going with an EH game here. I will cut Harding some slack because MD has a very good defense. Pretty much a run of the mill game here. I did like seeing the 3/5 from deep though.
DP (D+): You might be thinking a D here is harsh, but expectations have gone up! I don’t think DP necessarily played terribly, he was just kind of a non-factor. I feel like DP passed up some open threes as well, and he has been shooting the long ball well this season. Let’s fly homie!
Harry (C): See DP. Not much of a factor, outside of a couple nice mid-range jumpers early (and they were sexy). He missed some easy ones in the second half which hurt. Harry did make a nice play saving one of those misses from gong out of bounds though.
Liam (C+): A tough wide open missed layup late in the second half hurts Liam’s grade but I thought he played fine. He was kind of a non-factor outside his usual stellar defense, but when your team loses the grade suffers.
Dru (D): Would have been an F but it was his first game of the season. That said, woof, rough debut. Played about 5 minutes, had 3 rebounds, 2 ghastly turnovers, and a wild missed drive to the rim. Yuck.

Game 3: Kawhi Me A River vs. All Length, No Girth

ReKAP:

I looked to my left while scoring the previous game and who’s ugly ass do I see walk in…SAMUEL POLLOCK! I guess he got the Tibbs “don’t tell anyone else” approval. I thought this was kind of unfair at first, but after this game I was dead wrong. KMAR was fully staffed while ALNG was without John Reilly. I expected a pretty good game. Woops!

KMAR jumped ALL over ALNG right away behind a masterclass in shooting by the legend Tommy aka RoY Kahana. Holy moly what a show he put on, absolutely dusting Ruiz over and over again. Tommy was absolutely scorching to start the game and in the first half he pretty much hit every single shot he took. He dropped a cool 19 in the first half. Beast!

The Tommy surge really set the tone for the first half and this game overall. ALNG really struggled on offense, especially in the first half. Pollock had trouble fitting in with his new teammates, Ruiz was still looking for answers from deep and Joel couldn’t get much going. KMAR led 39-22 at the break.

The second half was a mere formality. KMAR was not fucking around, maintaining a double-digit lead throughout the half. Tommy cooled off, but his teammates had his back to keep the onslaught going. Koller got going, converting some tough drives at the rim. He was putting all that Djordje MVP buzz to bed. LaPorte continued his torrid three-point shooting and Ben Mac was working in the paint. He had a nice drive in the second half right into Djordje’s grill followed by a Mutombo finger wave. You ain’t stopping this train big fella! KMAR cruises to the 66-50 win with little resistance.

Grades:

Koller (A): Koller had an all-around very good game. 19 points on very efficient shooting. He didn’t miss a 3 or free throw and stuffed the stat sheet.
Ben Mac (A-): Very solid game for Ben Mac. Got the assists back up after last week and was a beast driving the ball to the rack.
Cavano (C+): Cavano wasn’t a huge factor in this game, but he did what his team needed to get the dub. Had a few buckets and hustle plays but otherwise was pretty quiet.
Tommy (A): Quiet second half, but he basically won his team the game in the first. What a showing by the vet. Loved to see it. Tommy is the frontrunner for steal of the draft right now.
LaPorte (A): Speaking of frontrunners, LaPorte is the clear frontrunner at this time for 5th man of the year. He has been stellar off the bench this season and tonight was no different. He is now 6/9 from deep on the season. Bang!
JJ (B): Quiet game for JJ, but he played his role. Didn’t do anything stupid and made a few plays. Can’t ask for much more from a bench guy.
Joel (D): Not a good game for Joel. No dimes, 2 TOs and 10 points. I expect more from a guy of his caliber.
Djordje (C): This was Djordje’s worst game of the season, but it was kind of expected with Koller on the other end. His line was actually pretty decent at face value, but his rebounding was way down. MVP stock…down!
Ruiz (D): Really rough game for Ruiz. Got abused by Tommy, had 4 TOs and went 1/9 from deep. The talent is there but I think he is trying to figure it all out.
Bakolas (B-): Shot well from deep to save his grade, but nothing special here. I like this guy’s game though and I think he has been a good piece for this team.
Pollock (D): Rough debut for Sammy boy. New league, new team so I won’t be too harsh, but he started the game with 3 TOs. Unacceptable.

Game 4: HOLLAND vs. The Corporation

ReKAP:

In the late game we had HOLLAND taking on The Corporation and this one stank of blowout city. Both teams were fully staffed so no excuses! I was looking forward to Devin taking on his idol in Mazz so that was a fun matchup to see.

We had a pretty good on our hands to start. HOLLAND looked a lot better this week, playing like an actual team and giving Corp all they could handle. Devin had an early beautiful high off the glass drive that impressed me. Mazz answered though as these two were exchanging blows. Corp led 17-14 and I thought maybe this could be a game?

Big Lou would spark a little Corp run, doing WORK in the paint. He was converting his little baby hook and when this shot is dropping you ain’t stopping it. He would end up with a solid double double in the game. Corp would push the lead to 11 behind Big Lou’s strong play but enter Civale. Oh baby what a shooting display. Civale nailed his first two treys and you could feel that this was going to be a Civale game. He was COOKIN’ in the first half, keeping HOLLAND within striking distance. Corp would lead by “only” 8 at the break.

Out of the break though, Corp would really start to exert their will. HOLLAND started to resort back to old habits, with a lot of 1:1 play that would result in empty possessions. Corp would capitalize, scoring on a couple Mazz-Walker pick and rolls. All of a sudden, I looked up and Civale was 6/6 from deep and HOLLAND was down 18. How is that possible!?

HOLLAND played hard and looked much better this week, but they couldn’t overcome the early second half run by Corp. The defense by Corp was too much and HOLLAND couldn’t manufacture consistent offense. Despite Mazz and Syd’s horrific three-point shooting, Corp comes away with the expected win 74-57.

Grades:

STAT (B): STAT played a solid game despite only scoring 8 points. He snagged 15 rebounds and only had 1 TO. I need to see more leadership from him though. This team needs some direction!
Devin (D): Devin was pretty quiet after a solid start. Only scored 12 and his team really needs him to get 20+. He will have better days ahead.
King (D): King was more or less a non-factor. He spent too much time complaining about the ref than actually playing ball. We have all been there though, god knows I have.
Bonvie (C): Went 0/5 from deep but part of that is because his team doesn’t really put him in positions to score. Bonvie can stroke with the best of them, and this team needs to figure out how to get him open looks.
Civale (A-): If you go 7/10 from deep, I don’t care if your team loses, that is impressive. Civale added 4 blocks too which was nice to see. Need more defensive rebounds though. One rebound?!
Robel (D): Not a good Robel game. His outside shot was way off tonight, and he just looked rusty overall. I need more!

Mazz (A-): Poor from deep but dominated the game. Dropped 20, had 8 dimes and 1 TO. I feel like he could have done anything he wanted against HOLLAND’s defense.
Cawley (B): Regular Cawley game. Some points, some rebounds, a nice block. The usual shit. Fuck him.
Syd (C): Rough shooting from deep. I liked how Corp’s offense became “feed Syd until he makes one” to keep his confidence up. Did other stuff though to contribute to the win.
Walker (A-): Walker was very good in this game. Made some nice shots around the rim and hit a middy. Also set some good illegal screens one that sent DQ into space.
Big Lou (A): Big Lou! Kid balled out tonight. Double double and a block. Love when he plays well.
EJ (A-): Nice game off the bench for EJ. Made 2 of his 4 from deep and played his role nicely. Two TOs hurt his grade a little.

B1 5v5 WED Week 3 Write-Ups

Game 1- Gravy Trains 2.0 vs. Orange OG’s

What a way to kick off our Wednesday night with this high offensive octane match up against Gravy Trains 2.0 and Orange OG’s.A hard fought game but Orange OG’s were able to squeak out a 64-55 win. Both teams came out firing on all cylinders, specifically Gravy Trains 2.0 being carried by the hot shooting of Eric P. who went ⅘ from 3 in the first half. To combat the hot shooting of the Gravy Trains, Orange OG’s were able to knock down 7 first half 3’s of their own. On top of the hot shooting, Orange OG’s really utilized their pick and roll action to get good looks at the rim and kick outs to open shooters on the perimeter. Both teams were all over the floor, diving for loose balls, and snatching rebounds out mid air. Alex K. for Gravy Trains had 10 rebounds in the first half alone. It was a back and forth battle in the half, but Orange OG’s head into the 2nd half with a 32-27 advantage.

Gravy Trains would not be denied going into the second half, as they went on a 13-7 run out of the gates to take a 40-39 lead and force Orange OG’s into an early timeout. Both teams exchange offensive blows throughout the second half and the hot shooting continued as the teams combined to knock down 18 long range balls. As hot as Eric P. was in the first half for Gravy Trains, it was Brett A. and Zach B. who carried a lot of the offensive load in the second half finishing with 18 points and 11 points, respectively. Jesse O. had an all around game or the Orange OG’s as he packed the stat sheet with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Orange OG’s also had a secret weapon in Judah who came off the bench to give them 17 points. Orange OG’s outscored Gravy Train 25-15 in the second half to take the victory.

Game 2- Intramural Heroes vs. G League

Intramural heroes jumped out to an early league and never looked back as they put up 91 points in a 91-73 win over G League. Tim G. dominated from the tip off to the last buzzer as he finished with a double double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. He was an elite three level scorer in this game and G League had no match for him. The game went back and forth and Bradley R. was able to keep G League in the game in the first half from his hot shooting from 3, knocking down 3 in the first half. Not only was he an offensive terror, him and Giannis V. were both terrors on the defensive end as they combined for 12 steals between the two of them. Jamal B. also started to get going offensively and he finished the half on a 6-0 run. Despite their efforts, G League headed into halftime down 33-51.

Not at all discouraged by the 18 point deficit, G League came out with a spark and went on a 9-0 run to start the half and cut the lead to single digits. However, they did not have the fire power to keep up with the Intramural heroes who had four players who put up 20 points or more. G League got hot late from 3 and got contributions from behind the arc from Jack A., Colin M., Patrick K., and Bradley R. Although the second half was dead even with each team scoring 40 points, the 18 point first half deficit was too much for G League to overcome.

Game 3 - Commando vs. Jelly Not Jam

Commando came out smoking hot to start the game as team captain Max scored the first 12 points of the game to put them up 12-3 early. Jelly Not Jam was not helping their own cause as they turned the ball over on the first 4 possessions of the game and could not hit a shot from the field to start off. After a collision, Max has to go to the bench and Jelly Not Jam takes full advantage by going on a 12-6 run to take the lead. These 12 points mainly came from transition buckets at the rim or from beyond the arc. Dave R. was starting to come alive for Jelly Not Jam and he and Max were both in double digits in the first half. Despite the hot start, Commando goes into half time with only a 5 point lead.

Similarly to the first half, the second half is the Max show as he finishes the game with 26 points and 7 rebounds. His ability to score at will is frustrating for Jelly Not Jam so they start to play a little more physical with him. This physicality leads to 10 trips to the free throw line, where he was able to capitalize on 7 of them. Thankfully, Marcken L. and Griffin M. got hot late in the second half from 3 as they both knocked down two triples to keep the game within reach. Jake H.  also did damage on the offensive end in the second half for Commando as he finished the game with 18 points. Slow start for Jelly Not Jam leads to a tough 8 point loss for them.

Game 4- Big Tuna vs. Tuesday Night Selects

This game between these two teams started off very slow. Both teams combined for only 8 in the first 5 minutes of the game. But when Big Tuna decided to turn it on, they really turned it on. They knocked down back-to-back-to-back 3’s on ensuing possessions to go up early. However, Kyle C. had a few tricks up his sleeve as he then hit back-to-back 3’s to get himself going. Late in the first half it seemed like fatigue set in for Tuesday Night Selects as they started to give up easy transition buckets and they ended the half giving up a 14-2 run. 

Chris L. and Billy A. were the dynamic duo you never knew you needed as they put on an offensive clinic the entire game. Billy A. even tried to throw a lob for Chris to dunk from half court, unsuccessful however. Both finished with 24 and 26 points, respectively. Tuesday Night Selects would not go down without a fight though as they were making huge plays on offense and getting gritty stops on defense when needed. The defensive charge was led by Ben C. and Cam O. as they both came up with two steals a piece in key moments. Quinton D. tried to carry the team as he finished with 14 points, team high honor. However, 3 late triples from Bill, Chris, and Matt C. put the exclamation point on what turned out to be a 22 point blow out win for Big Tuna.

Game 1 | Borme’s Disciples (76) - MostHated (53)

Holtze and the Borme’s Disciples Do It Again

Borme’s Disciples are 3-0 so far this season, impressively finishing on MostHated. The game was a fun one to see from the sidelines and almost seemed like a globetrotter game as Borme’s Disciples had a fun night with alley oop attempts and trick shot dunks. Sam Holtze always seemed to have a hand in the plays ending the night with 25 points, 2 steals and assists, 1 defensive glass and going 6 for 7 on free throws, all while staying true to 1 foul early in the first half. 

Further supplementing the win was Mac Bohuny who had a stellar alley oop from noneother than Holtze himself. He ended the game with 17 points, 3 boards on each end, and 1 assist, block, and a stea to round it out. Mike Conlin had 15 points and Will Jackowitz had 12 points.

MostHated seemed to get off to a hot start going on a 8-0 run to start the game. A quick timeout by BD along with a technical foul on Anthony Barbosa quickly shifted the energy. Dakari “Sticks” Hannah-Wornum had 15 points, an astonishing 3 big time blocks, and a steal. James Lambert stuck to his guns in the paint with 13 points and 3 defensive boards. Unfortunately, MostHated lost the rhythm early and BD put the nail in the coffin with a reverse dunk by Mac Bohuny. 

Game 2 | Ronin Blood Warriors (72) - Space & Pace (70)

Space & Pace Turnsover the Halftime Lead 

Despite being up by a bucket at the half, Space & Pace couldn’t finish it out making them 1-2 after last week’s blowout against Hartbrakers. It truly was a nailbiter to the end as both Kevin Nunez (RBW) and James Welch (S&P) hit back to back 3’s to send the game to OT, tied 66 each. 

Nunez and Isaac Lane were the stars for RBW once again this game as Nunez paved the way for the win with the tying 3 and an early dunk in the game taking the lead 10-7. He ended the night with 19 points, 5 defensive boards, 2 offensive boards, 2 assists and a block. Isaac Lane was once again a leading scorer with 22 of the 72 points RBW ended with. He also 6 offensive boards, 4 assists, and 2 defensive boards. It trul was a game of rebounds as Lane showed the hustle needed by chasing each of his missed attempts and converting on 6/8 of his rebounds. Alonzo Cooper had 10 points, 4 assists, 3 defensive boards, and 2 offensive boards. Ryan Canty had 10 points, 6 offensive boards, 1 defensive board and a block to help his team to the win. 

Space & Pace hit an early rhythm that quickl crumbled. Up 2 at the half, they seemed the more dominant team on paper but things quickly shifted in the second half. Jason Marino hit a crucial bucket tying the game at 63 with a minute left in the matchup. Thinking quick S&P called a much needed timeout to think of a game plan. Unfortunately, despite being able to get to OT, RBW completely took over the game scoring 6-4. 

Game 3 | Shooters Shoot (65) - Hartbrakers (64)

Shooters Shoot Barely Narrowly Get Win to Be Undefeated

This was the closest win for Shooters Shoot by far but nonetheless they got the deed done to be the only other team to be 3-0 this season. Despite having no bench, they were up 36-29 at halftime but quickly lost stamina leading to the close game. 

SS went on an early 8-0 run in the first 3 minutes but quickly lost that lead as the Hartbrakers then scored their own run of 12 points in a span of 3 minutes. David Reynolds had 19 points, 5 defensive boards, 2 assists, and 1 offensive board. He was assisted by Luke Rogers and Matt Pattyson who had 17 points and 15 points, respectively. Although big man Hugh O’Neil only had 9 points, he helped under the rim with 4 offensive boards, 3 defensive board and a block at the glass. Zack Armen to Rogers is an elite combo that never fails to make their pass and hit their man. 

Hartbrakers are now 0-3, not showing up for the first game of the season and then losing the next 2. This was the closest one for them yet with their attempt at a comeback with Devin Jensen sinking a triple to bring it to a 1 point game at 43-42 with Shooters Shoot up. Once again Devin Jensen led the game with 28 points, 4 defensive boards, and an assist. Tucker Landry was once again the assistant with 14 points, 4 boards, and a steal.

Game 4 | Team Takeover (49) - Skeleton’s Boys (61) 

After a tough loss last week, Skelton’s Boys bounce back to be 2-1 in a blowout game this season. Led by Erik Pettit and Jon Basett who had 15 and 16 points respectively, Team Takeover was no match for their style of play. Brenden McNamara, Elijah Anderson, and Ben Timme showed up for the team in the paint grabbing boards left and right with 15 total boards among the 3. Although Andrew Yamin was contained to 6 points this game, he passed the ball around the court aggressively to secure the win. 

After an intense matchup last week, it was gonna be interesting to see how TT faced against SB. although only down by 4 heading into the second half, they lost the rhythm a bit as the end of the game reached near. Once again, Jason Feliciano was the leading scorer with 14 points but only going 33% on 3-attempts and 40% on FTs. No one else was able to surpass 10 points to their name but Joel Nkounkou showed up big with boards, grabbing 5 off the glass and rim. 

B2 5v5 MON Week 3 Write-Ups

Game 1 - It Doesn’t Matter (66) vs Gino Time (96)

Gino Time could not be denied on this night getting huge contributions from several players in what may have been some of their best games so far this season. Erik M. could not be stopped going 8/11 (72%) from three point range and had 30 points. Gino Time had the lead for the most of the first half until It Doesn’t Matter came back to tie it up 24 apiece. After regrouping with a timeout, Gino Time pushed back to regain the lead once again into halftime 39-31. Gino Time dominated on the boards all game, especially Greg E. who had a monster game with 18 points and 14 rebounds, 4 of them offensive. The second half was when Gino Time took over, hitting 3 after 3. Max M. went off for 21 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists and Darren H. did a little bit of everything with 17, 13 and 6 assists, 3 steals and a block. Tauren on IDM was swiping people pocket’s with 7 steals as well as adding in 11 points. Those turnovers couldn’t be converted as well as his team giving up too many offensive rebounds and ultimately IDM ended up losing by 30. 

Game 2 - Wyld Stallyns (30) vs Thank You University (39)

This was a low scoring one and the pace was pretty slow for most of the game. However, the teams were evenly matched with multiple lead changes throughout the first half. Late in the first, Patrick G. had back-to-back And-1’s that cut the Wyld Stallyns deficit to one. The game remained close and Thank You University was up 20-18 at the half. For most of the second, neither team could get the ball to go through the hoop. Shaun H. did his best to keep Wyld Stallyns in the game, putting up 12 points, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Despite the effort it wasn’t enough as Thank You Uni never gave up the lead and won by 9. Eli V. led his team with 12 and 6. Kevin T. and Ben both had 6 points. Greg P. added 5, 7 and 4 assists.

Game 3 – Eastie Hoops (67) vs We Have Fun (40)

Eastie Hoops came out attacking the basket relentlessly and using good ball movement to get wide open shots. They went up 15-5 to start and the game was in their control until the final buzzer. Lots of turnovers by We Have Fun led to easy transition points and stat padding for Eastie. Although We Have Fun showed moments of life, it looked like Eastie Hoops had better conditioning and more team chemistry. With an 18 point lead after one half, Ryan W. hit consecutive 3s out the gate and crushed any momentum for the We Have Fun squad. Ryan ended up with 26 points, 5 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals and 3 seats while shooting just over 40% on 3PT. Lucas F. chipped in 14, 8 and 4 assists in the win. On the other side of the box score, Marc N. had a solid 11 points and 9 rebounds, while Chris A. and Rob Moran each had 8.

Game 4 – Tomahawks (44) vs Brick Squad (34)

Brick Squad got off to an early 8-0 start with all points coming from Malik R. The Tomahawks started to get going and after tying a few times the score was knotted up at 17 apiece. Players started talking some trash to each other and complaining of missed calls. The Tomahawks stayed poised and took the lead with around 7:00 minutes left in the 1st half, never trailing after that. They scored 11 straight points to lead 31-22 at halftime. Four of the starters managed to hit double figures with Sam B. leading the way with 13 and 8 rebounds. Brick Squad did indeed put up a lot of bricks and had trouble putting numbers on the scoreboard. Malik B. on the Brick Squad was able to get some production with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Franchise League Week 3 Preview

WEEK 3 PREVIEW

Two weeks are in the books and the league is starting to take form. I am pretty confident that we have 4 legit contenders at this point, but that could very well change. Don’t forget the Corp started last season 0-2 and ended up winning it all. Will a team emerge from the shadows this season? Time will tell. Two teams that come to mind are Joel’s and Keith’s. The jury is still out on them. Week 3 should shed some more light on those guys.

But first… Week 2 Player of the Week – Your week 2 PoW is Tyler Masone. Young fella went OFF this past week, scoring a league high 37 points to go with 9 boards, 7 dimes and 0 TOs. Masone feasted on HOLLAND’s lack of defense and led Keith to his first win ages. Keith owes this guy a fruit basket at the minimum.

Week 2 Role Player of the Week – Your week 2 RPoW is the ageless Tommy Kahana. Tommy didn’t look a day older than 25 in his week 2 shooting clinic, dropping a team high 19 points on 5/8 shooting from deep. His performance was well timed as the Bens had off nights offensively.

Week 3 Matchups

6:15 – Super Hoopers vs. Poor House

This is a sneaky trap game for SH. The first thing that comes to mind is Ini’s defense on Rosi last season when these two squared off. Ini did a fantastic job limiting Rosi and making him work hard for buckets. If the matchup remains the same, SH will need to get more offense from the supporting cast, especially from yours truly and Frongi after last week’s trash. In fact, I am dubbing myself as a big x-factor in this game. I have no excuse this week as I will not be sitting behind the table prior to playing, so I will be locked and loaded. Vegas has SH as a big favorite here, but if Masone and Keith shoot the long ball like they did last week, watch out.

SH -7.5

Player to watch: Frongi – I think Frongi is going to have some favorable matchups in this one. He has a quick first step to the rim and should be able to use that to his advantage with either Keith, Matty J, Ghost or Stull covering him. FOOD!

7:05 – Mulholland Drive vs. FTR

Oh baby, this is a fun one, a lot of fecal matter on the court. Two of the league’s best square off in JDM and Harding in what figures to be an all out war. Let’s not forget that we also have Chas vs. Harry as well as LeBlanc vs Vladi. Wooooweeeee! Man, I don’t even know what to make of this game. Both teams have been all over the place in the early season. Each team has 1 win, both defeating Joel’s team, so this is a big test for both squads. My gut feeling says that FTR is the team to pick here. MD just hasn’t looked right, especially on offense. JMul hasn’t been great, Chas looks like a lost puppy and LeBlanc’s shot has abandoned him. Give me FTR behind the 3-headed monster of Harding, DP, Vladi.

FTR -3.5.

Players to watch: JMul – We need a JMul game here. Rebounds, threes, blocks. Make it happen you bum.

7:55 – Kawhi Me A River vs. All Length, No Girth

This is a big game for ALNG. Through two weeks they have competed, with a skeleton roster, ultimately coming up short in both games. Will they finally break through and get a dub? It’s going to be tough. KMAR has the personnel to match up nicely with ALNG. Ben Mac can make life difficult for Ruiz, Cavano can handle Joel and Koller can basically cover anyone. ALNG is going to struggle to score so their path to victory has to be to muck this game up. Stay close and make some key plays late. I expect a big Koller game though as he attends the Djordje buffet and leads his boys to a win.

KMAR -5.5.

Player to watch: Ruiz – Round 2 of the Ruiz watch. I think he will shoot better this week after having a game under his belt. His team is gonna need it!

8:45 – HOLLAND vs. The Corporation

Potential blowout in the late game, as HOLLAND has proven they cannot cover ANYONE. Woof their defense is bad, and against Mazz, Cawley and company you better D up. I’m sorry but I just can’t see a win here for HOLLAND. Maybe Bonvie goes nuts from deep? Maybe Syd has a meltdown and gets ejected? Maybe DQ outplays Mazz? Even if all of these things happen it will still be an uphill battle for HOLLAND. I am going to have to see a real defensive effort from them until I pick them to win a game.

Corp -15.5.

Player to watch: STAT – We need a grown mans game from STAT here. He has it in him. He can draw fouls on Syd and take him out of the game, mentally and literally! I think we will learn a lot about the landscape of the league this week. Looking forward to it. - KAP

Over-30 Legends Week 3 Write-Ups

Shorthanded Goyle dispatch Amir Mortals

Week 3 opened with Chas’ Hot Goyle Dojo taking on Harry’s Amir Mortals. Goyle was coming off a tough 1 point loss to Bros last week and Amir Mortals were coming off a strong showing taking home a win against DropStep Murphys. Goyle would be up against it, playing without Weinstein and Ian Marlier. Amir Mortals would be missing Amir himself. I was excited for this matchup as previous Goyle mainstay James Bohnaker was stolen by Harry in the draft and I was hoping to see if this would be a revenge game.

Kodra opened the scoring with a 3 and Harry walked up into a midrange J. Roberts got in the post for 2 and point-god Harry found Bohnaker for 3. Roberts and Kodra would get some buckets for Goyle and Harry would cash two more midrange shots to lead all scorers at that point. Harry would have to sub out with an apparent shoulder injury, it’s possible his shoulder was sore from carrying his team’s offense up to that point.

McPherson would step into a 3 and it was 13-12 Goyle with 12 minutes left in the half. Roberts, who was having a great game for Goyle was bleeding all over his jersey from a cut on his finger, but after wrapping it up, he would be back in the game. Jake Gold would hit a layup and a 3 and Piasta contributed on the offensive glass for Mortals. Harry and Ian Cundall added buckets for Mortals but Jake Gold would score 6 straight for Goyle and they took a 1 point lead into the break.

Coming out of the break, Roberts found Jake running the floor for 2 and hit a 3 of his own and he continued his strong play. McPherson got another 3, but overall he was having a poor shooting game. Chas, who was having a rough shooting night as well, found Jake for 3 and Roberts added another bucket. After Mcpherson got to the line and hit 1 of 2, Goyle was up 36-29 with 16:00 left.

At this point the scoring completely dried up for Mortals and Goyle would start to blow the top off the game. Roberts would bully his way for 6 straight points and was having a dominant game. Jake Gold hit another 3 and dimed up Chas for a layup and Goyle was on another level at this point with pace and ball movement. Mortals seemed stagnant and couldn’t get anything to fall. Roberts and Kodra primarily continued to add it on for Goyle and lead would get up to as high as 20 and Golye would run away with the shorthanded win, 60-44.

Week 3 Game 2 ShawHanks Vs Astrik 

Ray Trey right away with and 1 3-0, then adds spin shot 5-0.Matty in the building at the 17 min mark, but Joel makes hook7-0. Hull working hard gets a scoop, then Paul $ a corner 3 7-5. Joel doing post things gets 2, but Hanks reposnds with a trey 9-8. Ray gets a 3 to go,but Hanks goes off glass for 2 12-10 10 min. Ray with tough taken Slim Reaper finally in on the cat with a 3 17-10. Matty slashes in but Feinstein gets lay up 19-12. Hanks post bucket, then Hull 2-2, then Hull hustle leads to matty trey we were all tied at 19 all! Matty gets to cup, but MJ ties things with floater. Peteet J , Frano J, Joel gets scoop, but Peteet sticks another J Hanks up 27-23 half. 

Joel Gets to post work right away, and than again 27-27. Hull 1-2, but there goes that man Hook shot Joel, but Hanks gets his own 2 in the post. Some crazy action but after Joel obrd hustle it was 34-30 Astrik up. Frano gets middy, but Ray to rack, Hanks not backing down gets 3, and Frano ies it with hook 37-37. Joel just magical tonight gets another lay in, MJ runner, followed by ray smooth move 43-37, then ray $ a 3. Team Shawhanks would not quit, Frano gets 2 off cut, Hull 2-2, Hull 3, and then again and they had the lead 47-46! Ray to rizack, but Hull balling obrd put in 49-48. Joel gets 2 with nice run, Ray hits J, Ray deep 3, MJ jumper, Matty would get 2 t’s and that would be the ball game, Asterisk comes  away 64-51.

Ray-B+- Didnt shoot efficenly, but his engine/efoort level is crazy. He is a unstoppable force 
MJ-B-) Didnt shoot as well as he had, but had some nice floaters/J’s. Like to see more dimes
Joel-A- Solid day from joel, very good on bothe ends. He plays like this they are very tough to beat. 
Fein-C- Seems frustrated with lack of looks, saw some eye rolls

Carey-D- Not much impact tonight, needs those 3’s to go down

Week 3 Game 3 Overhated VS EJ

Big Lu gets busy in the post right out of the gate, Ghost nails jimmy 4-0 17 min. Dutton widow work, than Kielley dives in, followed by Lane of glass 6-4. Kielley continues run with obrd finish 8-4. Ghost does Ghost things with j, but Dutton keeps pcae with middy of his own, Skelley post work, Dutton drive, Kielley 3 off Dutton hustle 17-8. Cavano finnay in on the act with runner, Dias gets scoop to go, Cavano 1-2, but Skeeley stops run with p n toll 19-13, Dutton adds obrd put in 21-13. Dias leans in, then Ghost hits J 21-17 half. 

Lindsey trey ball to start half 24-17. Ghost sticks J, but Dutton foster, Keilley j Overhated was balling, kielley gets 2 more in the post, and then Kielley was nailing 3’s by the time I looked up it was 40-27, and team slick never got close or recovered. Overhahted proving the haters wrong 46-37 as they go to 2-1.

Skelley-B- Didnt score it, but did everything else at a high level. 
Kielley-A- Dude is balling right now, showing he was worth that 8 pick. 
Dutton-A-) Really coming into his own, looking liek the elader and heart of this squad.

Week 3 Game 4 Brothers VS Drop Step 

Cody gets this party started with middy, but than Civale 1-2 2-1. Cody gets a 3 to go 5-1 18 min. Dany $ 3, J.Mul $ 3, then dany $ 3 holy holy 8-7. Cody banks ina  3 , this is a 3 party!! Frongo scoop 13-7. Joey tough take, but Cody trey ball money, but Joey not quitting gets another tough drive 16-11. Dany walking fire ball hits 3 16-14. J.Mul post, but Dany…….you guessed it hits another 3 18-17. Cody wants to be on fire as he hits another 3, Frongi hook shot 26-18 8 min. Frongi gets hot now as he hits 3, than 3-3 from the line after foul, followed by J.Mul 3, then J.Mul obrd hustle it was a god awful  36-21. The half did not get much better as Cody contunued being a walking fire ball, Dany hiting a bunch of 3’s trying to keep pae but it was 50-33 at the break. 

Drop step showed impressive fight here Joey and 1, Murphy post, Joey tough mofoen take, suddenly it was 5-40 they were within striking distance. J.Mul j, and Cody 3 put and end to the run though, and they would run away. Closest things got was 68-59, but the Brothers were just too good, too hot tonight. They win 85-74 go to 3-0.

5v5 Draft Week 3 Write-Ups

Week 3 

Subject: Team Robel (63) makes light work of shorthanded Shooters Over Bigs (45)

The score is a clear and accurate indication of how this lopsided match played out. Aside from some impressive shooting from Chris Jenco (25 points, 2 steals, and 4 rebounds) early on, offense was at a premium for Ryan Glynn-led Shooters Over Bigs. 

However, their opponent Team Robel had no issue scoring the ball. Led by the consistent Tyrone Mullings (21 points, 2 steals, 2 blocks, and 7 rebounds), they were getting to the basket and scoring at will. 

In addition to Tyrone, there were some surprise contributions from two of my favorites Steve Rakusin (14 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists) and Kevin Gillooly (11 points on 3 of 4 shooting from 3).

Steve’s (14 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists) got Team Robel off to a hot start, with their starting center Robel Ghebremichael coming off the bench in this matchup. Let’s say there wasn’t much of a drop-off offensively. I have watched Steve play off the last three seasons and this was by far his most impressive outing. 

Kevin Gillooly (11 points on 3 of 4 shooting from 3) my friend and teammate in #SDL 4v4 can shoot the hell out of the ball, but for whatever reason, it hadn’t translated when the game matter the most, well today it did. I’d argue he probably should’ve shot more.

Needless to say, Team Robel would run away with a lopsided victory that moves them to 2 - 1 on the season, as they go into week # 4 excited about the highly anticipated debut of Nahom Brhane.

• Steve’s Rakusin (14 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists)

Subject: PRIMETIME 4.0 (57) stays undefeated as they hold off Hooptopia (48) to move to 3 - 0

Admittedly, this game was never in doubt for PRIMETIME 4.0 as they start 3 - 0 for the second consecutive season. Led by Moooch (17 points and 6 Rebounds) Adam Liu (12 points and 3 steals), and Jacob Miller (15 points and 2 steals) they controlled this game from start to finish.

With two of the more physical teams in the league, this matchup obviously got a little chippy. It started with the physical defense of Adam Liu and David Thompson and that lit a fire under my guy Dan Schwartz (9 points and 12 rebounds).

PRIMETIME 4.0 combined for a mind-blowing 19 fouls, I’d argue it should’ve been more. I think Dan would agree with me, but you have to adjust and that’s what Hooptopia did in the second half. 

Ben Levin (17 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals) played an exceptional all-around game for Hooptopia. Not only embracing the contact but creating some of his own while dominating the block. As he in Dan Schwartz put the team on their backs as they mounted an impressive comeback. Ryan Nett played really well too with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. He did an amazing job facilitating the ball on a team with no shortage of weapons. 

Hooptopia efforts, Adam Liu played his best ball in the closing minutes shutting down any comeback attempts, as PRIMETIME continues to dominate against strong competition.

Subject: Danzig With the Stars (40) win an ugly matchup against Gear PF

In what was by the ugliest game of the season came down to the final seconds and a huge three made by my boy Mike Garofalo (11 points, 2 steals, 2 blocks, and 5 rebounds). Aside from the game-winning shot, there weren’t many highlights. 

At the half, Danzig With the Stars led Gear PF 16 - 12. No that’s not a typo. Both teams combined for a mind-blowing 28 points. While the frustration was channeled toward the officiating crew, I’d argue the poor play was more attributable to sloppy basketball, missed layups, and lots of turnovers. 

Despite being injured, Hamza (15 points and 6 rebounds) gave it a go and was one of the lone bright spots for Gear PF who are now 0 -3 on the season. He continues to be their primary scorer. 

Surprisingly, Miguel Monclova (9 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists) has struggled to find any offensive consistency this season after being nearly unstoppable last season. I’d argue he’s best with the ball in his hands facilitating the team offense. 

Unlike Gear PF, Danzig With the Stars featured a more balanced offensive approach. They got offensive contributions from a variety of players Carlos (7 points), Held (11 points and 17 rebounds), Matt ( 8 points), and (Duff (4). Despite their struggles offensively, they found a way to convert with the game on the line.

In the final moments down 2 points, Mike G put his clutch gene on full display as he connected on a huge 3 from the top of the key that would go on to be the game-winner. This team is going to be ridiculous when Ben finally returns from injury.

This was a heck of a finish after such an ugly start. Great game fellas!

Team COTE is handed their first loss of the season.

  The Boston Three Party

  From the start it looked like Mazz was going to lead his team to victory once again, but things took a slight turn right before the half as The Boston Three Party began to defensively harass COTE. The overly aggressive play seemed to have them flustered and it continued the rest of the night. Johnathan Abreu made his impact in this game. His numbers don’t show it but he seemed to make every play when it was necessary for his team. Scoring 8 points 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

  Rich Disola made the biggest impact on the scoreboard with 24 points. He was clutch from three point range shooting 50%, along with Matt Johnson shooting 42%. Rich also made a commitment to crash the boards against a much larger opponent with 11 boards.

  Matt walked away with 11 points.

  Eric Li scored 9 points and shot 71% from the free throw line.

  Tim Donnelly 8 points 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

  Richard Beato only scored 3 points but I swear he’s a much better ball player than what he displayed in the game. He can actually ball, don't let the numbers fool you.

  Nika needs more play time. It seemed like he could have more of an impact but every time he got in it seemed like he was pulled out 3 minutes later. 3 points 6 rebounds.

   

  COTE

  Mazz started off hot but then cooled off as the game went on. The collective defense of The Boston Three Party swarmed all over him. Rich got a nice block on him with some complementary trash talk at the end of it. Mazz and his teammates were getting fouled a lot especially in the beginning parts of the game. Boston Three Party had 8 team fouls in the first half. I really do think that physical play just wore them down. Mazzeo scored 22 points, while shooting 50% 5/10 from downtown.

  Evan and Jackson surely were needed in this game. I think their lack of impact on the rebounding was a contributing factor in this game. This was low for Evan who normally gets about 10 rebounds a game. Both players combined for 8 points and 17 rebounds (Jackson 11 rebounds total).

  Liam played like his usual self out there scoring 14 points and shooting 42% from long distance.

  Jamil the floor general came back to life scoring 9 points 4 rebounds and shooting perfect from the free throw line. Not his normal self but he’s playing with some injuries.

  Aidan Enright scored 4 points. His lack of scoring was definitely an impact in this game. He’ll be ready for the next game.

Bonvie trey to get us kicked off 3-0. Hanks nails middy, then Kap deep 3 18 min. Bonvie connects on another 3, J.Mul 1-2, but Kap hot early connects from deep again 8-7. Paul nice take to the hoop, then gets another 2 off cut12-7 12min. S.Mul and 1, Bonvie trey cut the lead 14-12. Big Lu post work, then Frano powers in, followed by Hanks J, Kap adds a 3 23-13. Kap/Frano p n roll magic to keep pace. Kap 3 , Bonvie $ 39-39. Clarke brakes tie with floater , and then got 2 in the post, followed by an S.Mul drive45-39 7 min to go. Clarke getting buckets , and Frano swoops in to keep pae 47-43.Bonvie hits yet another 3, then J.Mul 1-2. Frano makes big shot 51-48 Brothers up all they have to do is hit ft’s. They could not S.Mul misses, Paul drives in, J.Mul misses 1 n 1 and then kap found Frano for the game winning bucket 56-51, very good game here. 

Hanks Team

Kap-A-) The calming presence this team needed. Just knows how to get his guys in the right spot. That P N roll with Frano could be deadly. 

Frano-B-Really quiet rebounding numbers, but hit the big shot to lift his team to a W. 

Paul-B-Very solid in his role, had  clutch drive, and as usual made nice passes

HanksB-) Struggled shooting but thought played well in most areas. 

Tomar-C+-Refused to be posted in the 2nd half, i loved it!

Lu-C-) he will lay better, love his hustle and energy

S.Mul-A-) His effort is 2nd to none, just does so much out there. Work on those ft;s buddy 

j.Mul-D-Just hasnt gotten going yet, and they need him too

Kielley-C- Usually more impactful, he will have better nights 

Bonvie-A-)fuckign 7 3’s, this dude is a sniper 

Clarke-B-) gave thm a nice lift in the 2nd half, little more rebounds would be nice. 

Game 3 Los Sex Vs Randal

Murphy 1-2 to get us kicked off. Harry cashes middy, he liked that so much he did it again 4-1. Butter was butter from 3 4-4. Matty O bank 3 ball, followed by Cawley hook 9-4. Murphy keeping them in it with obrd work, but Jump Shot Harry was here 11-6. Murphy respnds with J 11-8 14 min. Cawley cut, Murphy gets 2 froma cut o his own 13-12. Arria got in on the act with a lay in, but Cawley fouled hits both. Ian obrd put in, but a Randal 3 kept his boys in it 17-15 10 min. Murphy ties things with middy 17 all. Zeng showd some magic as he slashed in, then Arria gets 2 running well. Cawley got 2 off the window to calm things, but Randal finished obrd

23-19, Arria nice cut for 2, and thot another 2 off a steal 27-21. Matty gets friendly role, but Arria hot 29-24. Cawley cutting basket, but Zeng obrd put in. Cawley and 1, but Murphy J finished his strong half 34-29. 

Harry/Murphy trade J’s, and then Matty O 3 ball, then Harry 1-2 tied up at 36. Cawley drive, then Ian trey 45-36 after some ft’s. Murphy got 2 off broken play, then Randal 1-2, but Cawley drive trying to sneak away 48-42. WE HAVE A BUTTER ALERT, he cashes 2 straights 3’s , but then we had a CAREYYY ALERT 3 ball 51-45.  That would spark off a big run for Los sex as they cruised to victory, 67-62.

Harry-B+-Started red hot, cooled but played a very solid game. 

cawley-A-)Rebounding wast there but 28, and 7 is right where he needs to be

Matty-B- he was good, but I feel like he can be even better with this team. 

Ian-B+-Very nice vet game, Smart plays all day 

Carey-B- Hit a big momentum 3

Randal 

Randal-B-) didnt shoot it well , but did everythign else. Dude is a ball magnet 

Arria-B-) Had some nice spurts but the 3 pt shoointg was off , and kept him from going off

Murphy-A-Very complete game, thought he was very good

Butterworth-B-Nailed 3 3’s gave his team life 

Zeng-C+- Thought he did some good things, hustles well, and is fast as shit. 

Game 4 Skelley Vs EJ

Fill in Lu cashed J to get us started, then Gold 2-2 4-0 17:20. Civale hook, Danner scoop up and under, Civale floater, then a 3 he was hot 9-4! Casey drive, Big Lu hits J, then he added a post 11-8. B.Rob gets 2 off nice cut. Lu 1-2, but Casey with smooth J15-9. Lu was balling as he got another 2, followed by Gold deep 3, he liked that so he did it again for the lead 17-15. Casey ties things with slip though drive, but Lu hit j again 19-17, Gold added a middy, but EJ nailed a captain 3 to keep pace 21-20. Lu gets 2 in the post, and Gold added a drive 25-20. Casey got a 3 to go, and he was feelin it so he canned another 26-25. Skelley makes nice fade, but 2 civale 3’s closed the half EJ up 32-27 but Skelley hanging around. 

Gold deep 3, then Lindsey splash job for the lead 33-32. B.Rob converts scoop, Civale drive, Gold calms things going 2-2, then he adds a midrange for the lead, Lindsey would add a j, and then another 3 42-36 Skelley trying to pull off the upset!. EJ gets cutting 2, then Casey hang shot, Skelley/Casey trade hoops, but gold finsihes filthy drive 46-42. Casey reponds with tough drive of his own, then Civale got easy2  off cut, Casey drive and then eJ;s squad really ran away with this thing , the score would get below 10 as Casey started scorign evryimte, and nailing 3’s. They win 71-59. 

Skelleys Team 

Gold-A-Dude is so fun to watch. Love how he impacts bothe ends, and sets up his teammates even with all the scoring. 

Skelley-C-Good D, but just coulnt get going on O

Lindsey-B-Played his role well, hit some big shots 

Lu-A-Balled the F out 13 pts/11 rbs/ 4 steals/ 2 blacks

EJ’s team 

Casey-A+-MVP level stuff, just unstoppable hen he decides its time 

Civale-B-When he started cutting he got whatever he wanted. Good finish to this game 

Danner-C+- He was ok, he needs to get some 3’s up

EJ-B-)Not much action but when his team needed a play he made it
