Subject: District 10 survives 9th Wonder in instant CAC #SDL Classic

The first half was all about District 10 and Chris Lynch as they got off to a scorching start. The older Lynch continued his stellar play, which allowed D10 to jump out to an early 14-point (24 - 10) advantage after 12 minutes of play. As previously mentioned, Chris was the early catalyst finishing with an impressive first-half stat line that read 21 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block.

A majority of his points came in the paint, as Nick and Chris were targeting the smaller Cam in the post, and it was paying dividends, as Cam would find himself in foul trouble (3) midway through the first half, facing a large deficit.

On the other hand, 9th Wonder couldn’t buy a basket, especially from three shooting a horrific 3 for 19 in the first half. Despite their lack of offensive success, they still managed to stay within striking distance, as they’d go into the half trailing 32 - 18.

9th Wonder

  • Ben Mitchell: 2 points
  • Cameron Daniels:9 points
  • John Reilly: 0 points
  • Joseph Breda: 3 points
  • Jake Darby: 0 points
  • Isak Ivanic: 4 points

District 10

  • Colin Gray: 2 points
  • Patrick Blaikie: 0 points
  • Nick Lynch: 9 points
  • Daniel Lyman: 0 points
  • Chris Lynch: 21 points

The second half started a lot like the first, after 8 minutes of play District 10 maintained a comfortable lead of 17 points (50 - 33). Just as I started writing 9th Wonder’s chances of coming back off, Ty cautioned me “There’s still a lot of game left”, and per usual I was wrong! A 12 - 0 led by Cam, Isak, and Breda closed a gap that once looked insurmountable. With 1 minute left in the game, 9th Wonder would find themselves down 5 (61 - 56) with momentum on their side.

Fast-forward to the final play in regulation, with 13.8 seconds left down 3 (68 - 65) 9th Wonder would own the final possession with a chance to send the game into OT after trailing by as much as 20. Cam deservingly so would pull up for the game-tying show, it rattled out, John Reilly was able to secure the offensive rebound and kick it out to Breda who was able to convert from three as time expired sending the game to OT and cemented 9th Wonder’s comeback with their season on the line.

Despite a stellar effort from 9th Wonder, the Lynch brothers would prove to be too much, as they

Combined for 61 points, 9 blocks, 38 rebounds, and 13 assists. This by far was one of the most entertaining games I’ve witnessed as a CAC scribe, but unfortunately, only one team gets to advance, congrats to District 10 as they move onto the second round.

9th Wonder

  • Ben Mitchell: With Darby and Reilly arriving late, Michell held the fort down and played extremely well. His biggest impact was on the board. Ben created a lot of second-change opportunities and shots for his team.
  • Cameron Daniels: Struggled early, but was literally unstoppable in the second half, scoring 24 of his team-high 33 points.
  • John Reilly: the underrated, but never under-appreciated Reilly had an outstanding game. He was as consistent and effective as they come.
  • Joseph Breda: this dude has ice water in his veins. His 12 second-half points and game-tying three-ball helped fuel their second-half comeback.
  • Jake Darby: played fantastic defense and continued to distribute the ball well.
  • Isak Ivanic: struggled mightily offensively, but we all have nights or mornings like this. His shots were good looks and all within the rhythm of the offense. Shooters shoot! He was effective defensively and did a great job slowing down Nick.

District 10

  • Colin Gray: his 5 points and 11 rebounds were huge for District 10. Most notable his 6 offensive rebounds. The points on second chance opportunities were the difference in OT and Colin played a huge part in this.
  • Patrick Blaikie: didn’t provide his usual production, but hit some huge shots down the stretch as the game grew closer. Pat would score all 7 of his points in the second half of this game.
  • Nick Lynch: barely missed a quadruple-double in a game he dominated without scoring. The older Lynch was the benefactor of many of his assists, but the younger Lynch did it all.
  • Daniel Lyman: Dan had another quiet game. I would love to see him get more involved offensively, but I’m sure they have a gameplan and the results are in the victory.
  • Chris Lynch: fell 2 points shy of a rare 50 ball. It’s not often we see this type of scoring outburst, especially in a game that featured so many talented players. Chris’ play can only be described as unstoppable.

Subject: Breda leads 9th Wonder to an impressive victory

This game would be all about Breda and an impressive outing by 9th Wonder as they dismantled the Adwaith-less R4H squad. Breda got off to a scorching start, scoring 24 of his game-high 39 points in the first half. Isak would get in on the fun with 9 first-half points of his own, but he and Cam had no interest in interrupting the Breda show, as he continued to cook.

After 10 minutes of play, 9th Wonder’s lead would balloon to 12 (29 - 16) with their momentum building with every basket and no end in sight, as R4H struggled to generate any offense. Kev’s (8 points) and France’s (7 points) would be the lone bright spots, as R4H would go into the half trailing 40 - 22  with little signs of life.

9TH WONDER

  • Ben Mitchell: 2 points
  • Cameron Daniels: 3 points
  • John Reilly: 0 points
  • Joseph Breda: 24 points
  • Jake Darby: 2 points
  • Isak Ivanic 9 points

RIGGIN' FOR HIGGINS

  • Kevin Gillooly: 8 points
  • Derek Skelley: 4 points
  • Darrien Higgins: 3 points
  • Jay Branch: 0 points
  • Josh France: 7 points

The second half would be no different than the first, as 9Th Wonder would run away with the victory in this lopsided matchup locking up the 6th seed. Given how well they’ve played recently, they’re a lock to upset some unexpecting team next week.

9TH WONDER

  • Ben Mitchell: Played well in his return from injury. His production, effort, and energy will be welcomed back as the playoffs start.
  • Cameron Daniels: Was effective and efficient, per usual. He could’ve scored more, but per usual he was the ultimate teammate.
  • John Reilly: Was dealing and dishing out assists. He was pretty effective playing the point and Breda was a major benefactor.
  • Joseph Breda: Dominant is the only way to describe Joe’s play. He nearly outscored the entire R4H team by himself.
  • Jake Darby: Had a fantastic game! The numbers do not reflect his actual impact on both ends of the court.
  • Isak Ivanic: Similar to Cam, Isak was efficient and effective and could have easily had a greater impact on this game. With Breda cooking, Isak focused on dominating the defensive end.

RIGGIN' FOR HIGGINS

  • Kevin Gillooly: Played a fantastic game. He and Branch were 2 of the lone bright spots for the R4H offense.
  • Derek Skelley: Queit game for Skelley, he had his hands full trying to slow down Isak which is no easy task.
  • Darrien Higgins: 2 steals, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. Fantastic production.
  • Jay Branch: Continued to distribute the ball well and get after it on defense. In a game where his team struggled to generate any offense, he created a lot of easy looks.
  • Josh France: Finished with 13 points, but looked a bit rusty. It wasn’t his best game, but the effort was there.

One Streak Begins and Another Continues….

As a quick reminder before I get to it, league sign ups are open for the Spring 2024 Season.  If you haven’t yet signed up click on this link: https://cacbasketball.playbookapi.com/programs/register/

Coming into this game I saw 9th Wonder (9W) as 5 point favorites.  Harriott’s of Fire (HOF) would have no subs and a fill-in while 9W would have one sub and were looking to go on their first winning streak of the season.

First half:

HOF didn’t look like a team ready to pack it in but 9W was playing extremely well.  At the half 9W was up 39-27.

Halftime stats:

9W:

Cameron Daniels 6 pts, 6 drebs

John Reilly 4 pts, 1 oreb, 3 drebs

Joseph Breda 8 pts, 2 orebs, 4 drebs, 1 ast

Jake Darby 1 pt, 2 oreb

Isak Ivanic 20 pts, 1 blk, 4 oreb, 9 drebs, 4 asts

HOF:

Robert Wood 9 pts, 4 orebs, 1 dreb

David Ter-Ovanesyan (DTO) 2 pts, 1 blk, 1 oreb, 6 drebs, 1 ast

David Pendergast (DP) 16 pts, 2 stls, 1 blk, 1 drebs, 2 ast

Pat Blaikie (Fill-in) 1 stl, 3 dreb

Player of the half:

Isak Ivanic

Second half:

While the final score makes it appear like the game was close and competitive it actually wasn’t.  The absolute three point shooting clinic that DP put on made the game way more interesting and the final score closer.  9W wins 84-79.

Player Grades:

Cameron Daniels B- his three ball was slightly off but mostly he’s capable of playing better.  Still a solid game but I know he can do more.

John Reilly B+ had a great game doing all the little things to help his team win.

Joseph Breda B aside from wearing a ridiculous beanie hat during the game and begging for stats after, Joe had a solid game, his energy and effort was for sure on display.

Jake Darby C+ got a few stats and did end up eventually scoring in the second half.

Isak Ivanic A+ his best game of the season and I still think he could’ve done more.

Robert Wood B was solid especially on the defensive glass in the second half.  A solid double double game.

David Ter-Ovanesyan (DTO) B- can’t ignore his 0fer from threes but overall he played well.  I was impressed with his defensive rebounding.

David Pendergast (DP) A was shooting the shit outta the basketball.  Was probably the best scorer on the entire day but it really just sucks he may not win a game this season.

Pat Blaikie (Fill-in) B- 8 pts (2-8 from three) 2 stls, 4 dress and 1 ast.  Played pretty solid especially considering he just played in a game.

Player of the game:

Isak Ivanic had a completely dominant performance.

Title: 9th Wonder stand on business in dominant win over Pushin' P

In what Cam classified as a “Must Win” game for 9th Wonder, he put on arguably his best shooting display of the season. Cam would finish with a game-high 36 points, but his 7 for 14 clip from beyond the arc was most impressive.

With the exception of Hanks who had a monster game (24 points, and 7 rebounds on 4 of 6 shooting from deep) Pushin' P struggled to generate any consistent offense. The overall shot selection, left a lot to be desired, as they continued to shoot themselves out of games as their losing streak extended to 3 after starting the season 2 - 0.

9th Wonder would go on to win, 82 - 72, but let’s be honest, this game was never in doubt as they led from start to finish.

Points at the half:

9th Wonder

  • Isak - 14 Points
  • Cam - 23 Points
  • Breda - 6 Points
  • Musse - 6 Points

Pushin' P

  • Hanks - 4 Points
  • Dylan - 10 Points
  • Josh - 7 Points
  • Preston - 13 Points

9th Wonder

  • Isak - Dominated the boards with a game-high 16 rebounds with another 20+ performance. I couldn’t ask more of the big fellas.
  • Cam - Put on an absolute shooting clinic. The only way I can describe his performance is dominant, but I can’t say that I’m surprised.
  • Breda - The Italian Stallion was solid, despite his shooting struggles. A healthy Breda makes this team extremely dangerous heading into the playoffs.
  • Musse - Chipped in with 9 points and actually played some defense. Definitely a positive plus-minus in this one.

Pushin' P

  • Hanks - Played extremely well and held his own against Isak. His improved shooting from deep over the last couple of weeks has been very noticeable. He did enough to help his team win.
  • Dylan - Chipped in with 12 points, but didn’t have his usual impact defensively. Similar to Hanks, he was efficient in his limited touches, but for this team to end their losing streak, they need more from Dylan.
  • Josh - Is the best player on this team, so 10 points isn’t going to do it for me. Josh did a lot of things well like rebounding (12) and distributing the ball (7 assists). I’d like to see Josh assert himself a little more offensively because we all know what he’s capable of.
  • Tim - Shot the ball a lot and while he’s a very good player, the attempts were not only difficult but forced at times. I’d love to see him play within the team offense because he’s too talented to be shooting 2 of 15 from long-range. If he trusts his teammates, they will create great opportunities for him.

That’s why they call him…

Coming into this game I had The Spice Channel (TSC) as a 5 point favorite.  I initially thought Ghost was out but he ended up confirming his attendance and actually was the first person to show for either team.  On the opposite side Joe was returning from injury but 9th Wonder (9W) was missing Ben still due to injury.

First half:

I’m not going to lie, the start of this game was uglier than if Shanaynay and Wanda Jackson had a baby.  We did have a game though and TSC was up 10-6 with 13:23 left in the half.  As the half continued and the crowd started to get more into it the game became more interesting, at the 6:15 mark TSC took a timeout trailing 20-18.  TSC did regain the lead but right before the half 9W trailed 30-24 and looked to hold the ball for the last shot.  Unfortunately for them they didn’t and after the failed scoring attempt TSC came down got the ball to John Harding and bang buzzer beater three TSC was now up 33-24.

Halftime stats:

TSC:

Tommy Ng 1 dreb

John Harding 23 pts, 2 stls, 2 blks, 2 orebs, 6 dregs, 2 asts

Chas Belliveau 1 dreb

Djordje Vlajkovic 6 pts, 5 orebs, 2 drebs, 1 ast

Michael Fraher 4 pts, 1 ast

Alan Orellana 1 stl, 1 oreb

9W:

John Reilly 10 pts, 2 orebs

Joseph Breda 2 pts, 5 drebs, 1 ast

Jake Darby 1 stl

Isak Ivanic 8 pts, 1 oreb, 4 drebs, 1 ast

Player of the half:

John Harding

Second half:

Within the first 3 minutes and 7 seconds of the half TSC went on a 5-0 (for those of you counting along at home TSC was up 38-24 now).  9W did a great job battling and being the game within two possessions, down 42-36 with 5:58 left in the half.  However they were never able to close the gap and would go on to lose 54-42.

Player Grades:

Tommy Ng C+ didn’t score but most importantly kept his emotions in check.  He also grabbed a couple of rebounds to help his team secure some possessions.

John Harding A+ was the best player on the floor on both ends of the court.  Overall just an amazing game was probably the best most complete game I’ve seen from him.

Chas Belliveau C+ did knock down some free throws and played good defense to go along with other stats.  Ultimately he doesn’t care because his team won.

Djordje Vlajkovic B was a monster on the offensive glass but did come late which I think threw his rhythm off a little.  Regardless his presence helped his team secure the victory.

Michael Fraher B did what he does best which was score the ball efficiently and make other contributions.

Alan Orellana C+ he didn’t score but he also didn’t shoot much.  He made same great plays to help his team win

Cameron Daniels C+ I’m not sure exactly what happen.  He didn’t play bad but he also didn’t play good.  Lack of aggressiveness, fatigue from play defense, no clue but I expected more from him and I know he does of himself too.

John Reilly B had an unbelievable scoring first half but then came back down to earth.  Was still somewhat of a menace on defense although it doesn’t necessarily show on the stat sheet.

Joseph Breda B- his energy and overall effort was great.  The ill advised three in the first half I didn’t like.  Outside of that I thought he played decently for his first game back.

Jake Darby C made some contributions.  I think he could’ve done slightly more, his team definitely needed it.

Isak Ivanic B he was pretty good but it just unfortunately wasn’t enough.

Player of the game:

John Harding, the guy was great and did absolutely everything helping his team get a good win.
