Round 1 of the Over30 playoffs wrapped with a nightcap between the 4 and 5 seed in Mazz Hysteria and Hot Goyle Dynasty. After a disappointing season, Chas’ team got some standing help via a week 9 Know Your Worth loss which catapulted them from the 7th seed to the 5th seed. Mazz Hysteria finished out the season with two straight wins and Mazz secured his umpteenth Over-30 MVP award. Heading into this matchup I was seeing plus matchups inside for Murphy and Bohnaker and was expecting big games from them.
Over the jump Mazz set the tone with a deep 3 but Chas responded with a tough and-1. Chas and Murphy traded buckets. Clarke got a bucket to go, but the tide would turn MH’s way with a Bohnaker 3 and a Murphy post. Mazz scored again, but two huge threes from Rich Carey kept Goyle in the game. Weinstein got his first bucket midway through the half and Danner hit a big time three for MH. Kodra got a three to fall but EJ got one to fall as well. Things were about even until Rich Cody, in his first game bac from injury, hit a series of threes to give Goyle a 7 point lead. MH was able to swing back with Mazz hitting a three and Danner closing out the half with another clutch 3. Goyle went into the half up 6.
Coming out of the half Mazz hit a three from halfcourt and MH went on an 11-2 run. Halfway through the 2nd half, MH had recovered the deficit and was up 2. Kodra got aggressive and he and Mazz would trade buckets. With time winding down in the half, Weinstein went into attack mode and hit three straight jumpers. Gyole took back the lead with two minutes left. Murphy hit 1/2 at the free throw line to cut the lead to one and with :30 left, Cody missed the front end of a one and one. Bohnaker rims out a three ball but Mazz was to find him again off the miss to put MH up 1, 52-51. Coming down the other end, Weinstein put up a tough contested jumper that rimmer out. Clarke was there for a putback as time expired but he couldn’t convert and MH squeaks out the 1 point victory. MH will take on Redeem Team in the semis.

We closed out the regular season with Goyle taking on Know Your Worth. Both teams were in the bottom half of the standings but the outcome of this game would have some implications of playoff matchups. Goyle would be missing Rich Cody, who may be out for the playoffs, and Know Your Worth had everyone available.
Goyle was aggressive to start, with Weinstein driving to the rim and Chas drawing contact and getting to the free throw line. Frongi was doing Frongi things for KYW, hitting a series of tough layups. Weinstein responded with an and-1 finish and he was not hesitating to drive into contact and finish at the rim. Frongi had an and-1 of his own followed by Weinstein and Cundall trading threes. The first half was dominated by Frongi and Weinstein, who would lead their teams in scoring by a wide margin. Going into the half, KYW had a 3 point lead.
Coming out of halftime, Weinstein tied the game with a three. Frongi continued his strong play, scoring the next 6 points for KYW. Cawley, who had been having an uncharacteristically tough game shotting the ball got a jumper to fall. Goyle went on a 7 point run, led by Weinstein and Clarke who had a big and-1 off an offensive rebound. After some Frongi free throws, KYW’s lead was down to 1. Cawley started to come alive in the clutch for KYW and he and Kodra traded buckets. The game was tied with time running out and Goyle had the ball. Chas got a good look at the three, but it bounced out and we went to overtime.
In OT, both teams struggled to score early, but then Kodra hit a big 3. Frongi would get called for a travel and give the ball back to Goyle, where Weinstein would take advantage and hit a bucket to go up by 5. Weinstein scored again for Goyle follow by a clutch three by Cawley. After the make, a mental error by KYW who called a timeout when they didn’t have any and sent Weinstein to the line for the tech He cashed both free throws to put the game away and we finished the regular season with an exciting game. The Goyle win and KYW loss shifted the standings to bump Goyle up to 5 and KYW all the way down to 7.

Game three of week 8 featured Chas’ Hot Goyle Dynasty taking on Skelley’s Redeem Team. RT has looked like one of, if not the top team in the leadue for the majority of the session, led by Civale’s excellent play. Goyle has had a bumpy season so far but still has been comepetive in games. Coming into this game, Goyle would be missing Cody and Redeem Team would have everyone.
Weinstein and Civale traded threes to start things off. Chas was playing aggressive and leading the charge for Goyle, converting two finishes at the rim and Clarke had a nice dime to Kodra. RT had answers, with JET hitting a deep three and Jeffries making a nice move to the rim. After a pair of threes by Kodra and Chas, Goyle had an early 17-11 lead. RT would bounce back, let by Civale and Jet. Scott Mulholland was also providing great defense and second chance opportunities. He was really laying it out there physically, hitting the deck and diving for loose balls. Jeffries had another tough finish plus a foul and RT tied the score. Civale had some nice buckets to wind down the half and it looked like RT was going to take a lead into the half, but Clarke hit a miracle full court heave at the buzzer to give Goyle a one-point lead.
Coming out of the half Redeem Team went on a 9-3 run, led by Civale and a Clarke own goal. After a few minutes, RT had a swung the game and established a 7-point lead. Scott continued to make life difficult for Goyle in the paint and was dominating the offensive glass. Goyle would make a big push with Weinstein playing inspired ball, hitting his jumpers and getting to the free throw line. After a signature Chas steal to fast break layup, Goyle had the lead down to 2. After a pair of threes by Chas and Kodra, Goyle finally broek through and took the lead. With around 4 minutes left, Scott came down hard going for a board and was injured on the play and had to leave the game. Around this time Chas also picked up his fourth foul guarding Jet and that would be key down the stretch. Weinstein had one of the best plays of the game, cutting through the defense with the righty Shammgod and finished a tough layup. Goyle had a 2-point lead with under two minutes to play. Weinstein made another clutch bucket to give Goyle a four-point lead. With time running out, Civale made a great read and picked off Goyle’s inbound pass and Jeffries hit his only three of the game to cut the lead to one. Weinstein got fouled and went to the line and uncharacteristically missed the front end of the one and one. Civale grabbed the board and with 10 seconds left the ball was in Jet’s hands. Chas was guarding him with 4 fouls and Jet saw an opportunity to attack and drove in for a floater with 5 seconds left to take a 1 point lead. Goyle never got a shot off and Redeem Team ekes out a win to remain in first place in the standings.

Jeffries B+ made big plays and hit a clutch three, but was inefficient getting there

Game 3 of Week 7 featured Chas’ Hot Goyle Dynasty taking on Harry’s New Hotness. Harry’s team has looked quite deep throughout the season whereas Goyle has stumbled somewhat and are trying to return to form in time for the playoffs. NH was missing their leading scorer in Brett and Goyle had everyone. Would an unlikely hero step up to make up for Brett’s absence?
Coming out of the gate Liam and Etheridge were getting buckets for NH. Liam was coverting jumpers and Eth was playing bully ball in the paint. Weinstein hit a midrange and Chas converted a three and after 5 minutes NH held on 5 point lead. Nobody on Goyle was checking Harry at the three point line and he splashed a three. Kodra responded with a three for Goyle but Eth continued to get tough buckets down low for NH. Harry got a good look at the midrange jumper and splashed that too. The form was looking solid and Harry was feeling himself. Roberts got back to back makes in the paint and NH lead was up to 11. With 5 minutes left in the half, Harry splashed back to back threes and there was something special in the air. At this point none of Da Point Gawd’s shots had even touched rim. Just pure, wet, sexiness. Clarke and Kodra added some points for Goyle but Harry cashed out another 3 with time running out in the half to cap off his perfect 5-5 from deep half. New hotness took a comfortable 37-25 lead, with Harry leading all scorers at 19.
Coming out of the half Goyle exploded for a 10 point run, led by Kodra and Cody, and quickly cut the lead to 2. Harry said enough of that and hit his 6 straight three and Liam and Eth added points in the paint. Weinstein and Kodra scored to keep the NH lead at 5. Etheridge had some nice plays, grabbing a steal and taking it coast to coast and following up either another bucket. Roberts was making great reads out of the post and passing out to open shooters. When he found Harry for his 7th straight three, Harry was looking like the best shooter to come out of the Balkans since Peja Stojakovic. With 5 minutes left, NH had a 13 point lead. Liam got some buckets for NH but Harry would hit three more 3’s to remind everyone in the gym they were witnessing greatness. He would finish the game with 34 points on 10-12 shotting from deep. NH would go on to win 72-51 and looking like a dominant force in the league.
New Hotness
Harry A+++ incredible performance. Shooters shoot.
Liam A made the most of his increased role on offense.
Roberts A Great job on both sides of the ball. Finished with 7 assists.
Eth A big time double double, finished with 15 and 14
Goyle
Chas C not a terrible game from Chas, but struggled to find good looks
TC C limited opportunities on offense, had a tough time with Roberts guarding him
Weinstein C- needed more than 15 points from him
Carey B had a nice block and got some boards
Kodra B+ impacted the game in many ways, led the team in assists
Cody C- had a nice stretch coming out of the half but Goyle needs him to be consistent
