Locked and Loaded sends DTO and the Old Bucks packing
The big storyline heading into this one was the absence of DTO as he was by far the best defender on Civale’s team. We saw last week that didn’t even matter for some games, so for DTO to win they were going to have to outscore Glynn’s team. With points likely to be at a plenty, we were likely in for some fireworks and that’s what we got eventually, to the action!
Both teams started off slow with the score 10-10 after six minutes. Casey was the only offense for Civale, while Glynn was more balanced with Clarke, Weinstein and Isak all getting on the board. The slower pace the initial stretch was played at favored Glynn’s team, but over the next few minutes Casey started to really push it and got some easy looks in transition. Civale’s team regained the lead during this stretch, but it was short lived as their defense continued to allow easy look after easy look for Glynn’s team. They also were getting killed on the glass as Isak and Clarke continued to rebound basically every miss. Isak especially was feasting down low getting multiple chances on most possessions.
Glynn also got on the board in this stretch with a pair of buckets, including a nifty reverse. After an Isak three and Clarke two put Glynn back in the lead, Civale had seen enough and called his second timeout of the half with five minutes left and his team down 33-30. Civale’s team responded with Casey making a layup and the free throw and Jake a pair of free throws, but their defense was still awful and Glynn’s team continued to score whenever they wanted. After a late run, Glynn entered the half up 42-35 and looked in control with Civale’s team have no answer for Isak. He had 24 points at halftime and Clarke chipped in 10, which more than made up for Weinstein only having four. Casey was the only offense for Civale’s team with 23 first-half points, while Civale had eight and Jake four.
The second half got started like the first half ended with Isak destroying Civale’s team down low and Casey continuing as the only offensive threat. After seven minutes the Glynn lead had expanded to double-digits with Weinstein also finding his jump-shot in transition. With 15 minutes left, the lead had expanded to 14, but Casey hit a three to get it back to eleven. Over the next minute both teams would score once and for some reason Civale used his final timeout of the game at the 13:57 mark.
Over the next five minutes, the teams would trade bricks and baskets as both teams scored seven points meaning nothing really changed. Civale finally got not he board with a trio of free throws, but Clarke answered with a bucket. After a Casey layup and Weinstein tough jump-shot, Isak got fouled going to the rim. Some words were said after that and continued to be said leading to the game to be called after a bunch of technicals were issued with Glynn’s team winning 71-57.
Locked and Loaded
Isak A+: Dominant display in the paint to which Civale’s team had no answers
Clarke A+: His activity on both ends really bothered Civale’s team and almost reached double figures in both offensive and defensive boards
Weinstein B+: Quiet game overall, but seemed like he finally started to get going in the second half just before the game was called
Glynn B: Solid defense and a couple of nice buckets
Big Guns B: Had a nice board and great pass to make the most of his opportunities
DTO and the Old Bucks
Casey A: Did everything he could on offense to keep his team in the game
Civale F: Brutal on defense and from deep and made one of the worst inbounds passes I’ve ever seen
Gold F: Bad day at the office
Eloi and Stull INC: Barely touched the ball on offense

DTO and the Old Bucks choke away the top seed in spectacular fashion
Coming into this one things were pretty straightforward as all DTO and the Old Bucks had to do was lose by 24 or fewer points. These two teams met in week two and DTO won by 24 albeit Growing Pangs didn’t have Scott. Still, DTO had been dominant this year, winning by double-digit margins in every game at full strength. They did have two losses, but both were when understaffed so it seemed like a given they’d be able to stay within the number. Growing Pangs knew their task as well though and had been playing great as of late so anything was possible.
The way things started, it seemed like it would be a very straightforward game. Civale’s squad was cooking from deep and just two minutes in, they were ahead 17-9. The pace was frantic and within two minutes. It was 17-16 as Gordon and Pang were getting good looks. Scott made a layup to give Growing Pangs their first lead at 18-17. The next few minutes were some of the most dominant play by a team I’ve seen in some time. Growing Pangs was getting whatever they wanted, meanwhile DTO was turning the ball over on basically every possession. They had 10 first half turnovers and just seven minutes after being up eight, they found themselves down 18 at 37-19.
As bad as DTO were playing though, an 18 point defect was comfortably within the number still and you figured they’d right the ship. The opposite happened, however as over the next few monists the scoring slowed down for Growing Pangs, but DTO still couldn’t score. It was 44-21 with seven minutes left meaning the Growing Pangs was on a 35-4 run over a nine minute stretch. Casey woke up after this and got a couple of buckets and then DTO got a three also to bringing it back within the number at 49-31 at halftime. Scott led the way for Growing Pangs with 17, while Gordon had 14. DTO led the Old Bucks with nine, while Jake and Casey had eight.
Even with as bad as they played in the first half, Civale’s task was simple, only lose the second half by six points and you still clinch the top seed. Unfortunately, only one team showed up to start the second half and it was DTO and the Old Bucks. Scott was cooking Civale in the paint and Civale had a couple brutal turnovers. Pang also started going after a quiet first-half and Taha also was playing fantastic. Slowly but surely, the lead continued to extend and half way through the half, Growing Pangs was up by 26 at 72-46.
After that, Taha continued to cook. He had a couple of twos and then a three and the lead was now 31 at 85-54. As bad as Civale’s team was playing, one run would bring them back into contention and it looked like they mighty get it after a pair of threes brought it back to a 26 point game at 92-66 with 330 left. Taha answered with a jumpsuit after that, but Jake made a reverse to keep it at 26. At 26 Civale’s team only needed to make a bucket and play some tough defense, but that’s not something they are very good at and Taha continued to answer every bucket they had. KD finally called the game with a minute left after Casey slipped and took out Pang with Growing Pangs grabbing the top seed with a 98-70 win.
Growing Pangs
A+: They had to win by 25+ and they did
DTO and the Old Bucks
F: This was one of the worst performances I’ve seen from a team in a CAC game that mattered in some time.
