Quick one while it’s all still fresh in my mind.
GAME 1 – SH vs. YGL
YGL came in as narrow 1.5 point favorites, and there were some questions about this line as SH got killed by YGL late in the year sans STAT & DPoY Marcel. But we all know how playoff games can go, and I got bankrupted on my last big line. We had a nice surprise from Lord Tibbets as the new ref showed up tonight (and about 15 mins late at that).
We came out of the gate HOT and with a lot of foul calls and missed FTs. Stat grabbed an OREB off the Marcel missed FT and started us off 2-0. Barbour was immediately under fire as SH had Marcel harass him at the top of the key and push him to the wing where they trapped him every time. Barbour didn’t even see a shot attempt until 7:00 to go in the first half, so this strategy started out well.
We had a pretty tight game throughout the first half. SH was able to stretch the lead to 18-10 at one point, but YGL would storm back off of a banked 3 by Cam and Barbour’s aforementioned first FGA. Cam would then convert a nice and-1 to bring it to a 1-point affair.
Barbour would hit a pair of FTs late in the first half, followed by a Lerner drive, and we were tied up at 25. SH went cold for a little stretch here and couldn’t put any points up in the last 3:30. Barbour had a tough look at the buzzer to go up 3, but couldn’t convert. At halftime we were tied up 25-25.
The game started out in a scoring frenzy, but slowed significantly in that first half. The second half would continue with more of the same physical brand of playoff basketball. Barbour was able to get much more action this half as YGL figured something out on offense to get him away from the traps on the wing; he’d go 7-for-12 in the second with three triples to finish with 21. From the 10:00 mark to the 4:00 mark, we never saw a lead of more than 3 for SH, and YGL briefly took a 1-point lead after a big Barbour 3-ball.
There was a possession that Marcel attacked Barbour on a drive to draw a foul and it worked, giving Barbour his 5th with 5 minutes to play, but the ref quickly gave the foul to Lerner as he didn’t want to foul anyone out.
There was one series where SH couldn’t get anything to fall, but Marcel and STAT got 3-4 offensive rebounds to keep the possession alive, and Oullette was able to can his 2nd attempt from three in that possession. I thought that might be a turning point, but Barbour hit another one of his threes a few seconds later to get it back.
But then SH went on a back-breaking run as Marcel would get a bucket inside and Rosi would hit a very clutch 3 to go up 51-45 with just over 3 minutes to play, and then add a layup to push the lead to 8. JMul would keep things alive with a 3 of his own with just over a minute left, but Rosi would find Marcel for another two. SH missed the front end of 2 of their 3 1&1’s to give a glimmer of hope to YGL, but it was too late and Barbour fouled out during FT time. Cam & JMul would both jack up threes down 6 with under 20 seconds to play, but neither could fall.
Super Hoopers takes an INTENSE Game 1, 59-53
GRADES:
YGL
Chas (C) – Didn’t get a ton of looks offensively, but wasn’t able to convert his limited shots. Gave his other guards a lot more run than himself though. 0-1-0, 0-3 3PT
Lerner (B) – Lerner did a nice job inside the 3 point line, but came up short on his 4 threes. Played pretty solid defense and did a good job of limiting penetration. 12-5-1, 6-13 2PT, 0-4 3PT
Barbour (B+) – Heavily docked for attempting 4 shots in the first half, but credit SH’s defense. Made a strong showing in the second but came up just short. Had some sexy jumpers in the defenders’ faces that made me go “oooo”. 21-2-1, 5-9 2PT, 3-7 3PT, 2-2 FT
Walker (B-) – Clearly wasn’t a part of the gameplan, but I wanted more rebounds from the big fella, as SH cleaned up on the offensive rebounds. 3-4-1, 1-1 2PT, 1-4 FT
JMul (B+) – Thought John played really well despite the low scoring output. Relatively good efficiency and did a decent job on defense when he got switched onto quicker players. 9-6-1, 3-4 2PT, 1-3 3PT
Cam (C-) – After a really clean first half, Cam was a disaster in the second half, going 1-for-8 with his one bucket being a garbage bucket with under 30 seconds left. Had some decent looks in there, but couldn’t get anything. 8-3-1, 2-6 2PT, 1-6 3PT, 1-1 FT

Super Hoopers
Rosi (B+) – Relatively quiet first half but exploded in the second to lead all scorers with 18. Assist numbers weren’t there, but this game didn’t have a lot of open shots for either team, so assists were down across the board. 27-10-2, 7-13 2PT, 3-6 3PT, 4-4 FT
Oullette (C+) – Loved the rebounding and passing, but had a tough shooting night. Bumped up to a plus because the ones he hit were enormous. 12-8-2, 1-5 2PT, 3-10 3PT, 1-3 FT
Marcel (A) – Holy smokes. Player of the game. Did an incredible job forcing Barbour to the trap in the first half, and had more offensive boards (7) than all of YGL. Dude was the absolute motor for this team tonight. 14-9-4, 5-8 2PT, 4-8 FT
STAT (B+) – The numbers don’t really show his impact, but his presence in the paint and on OREBs was also much needed and came with some good timing as well. 6-9-1, 2-9 2PT, 2-3 FT
Frongi (C) – Went scoreless on three attempts, but wasn’t gameplanned to be an offensive piece this game. 0-2-1, 0-2 2PT, 0-1 3PT, 0-1 FT
Matt (INC) – Didn’t play enough for me to give him a grade, but noticed he handled the higher intensity well and didn’t do anything bad when he was pressured and/or trapped in the corner. 0-1-0
