SPRING 2024 Saturday Draft League FINALS

Subject: WIth so many contenders (4 teams 6-3 or better) it's no surprise that the playoffs were topsy-turvy. EJ emerges from the rubble with the SDL title after a hard-fought regular season and playoffs!

Video ~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rX_0rismww

After an intense regular season and playoffs, Euphoria and Team EJ were set to compete for the championship. In my playoff predictions, I viewed Euphoria as the slight favorite, though this hinged on the performance and influence of Joe Dwyer, as well as the bench advantage provided by Trevor and his impressive skill.

Sadly for Euphoria, Trevor was unable to make it to the game, leaving Jamie Harriott as their sole option on the sidelines. This was bound to be a critical factor as the match progressed into the final moments.

Now, let's delve into the recap. Team EJ took an early lead, establishing an 8-point advantage (13-5) within the first six minutes. Although neither team was shooting particularly well, Team EJ demonstrated a more energizing and intentional style of basketball, while Euphoria appeared to be slightly out of sync.

For Team EJ, Matt S was causing his usual disturbances, setting solid screens and playing with a level of toughness that Euphoria wasn't ready for. While the focus, particularly from Emmanual, was on containing MVP Dan Barbour, Starr’s effectiveness in the Pick-N-Roll provided Barbour with just enough space (if only for a moment) to contribute.

As anticipated, Team EJ's early lead didn't hold for long, as Euphoria surged back with three minutes left in the first half, narrowing the score to 24-20. This comeback was spearheaded by rookie sensation Garry, who netted 16 of their 22 total points.

Despite Garry's impressive performance, Team EJ headed into halftime with a 29-22 advantage, leaving the outcome still very much in the balance.

Halfimt Time Stats

Team Eurphoia:

  • Dan B: 8 Points
  • Angelo: 7 Points
  • Rob W: 7 Points
  • Matt S: 4 Points
  • Slick: 3 Points
  • Dan F: DNP

Team EJ:

  • Dwyer: 0 Points
  • Garry: 16 Points
  • E: 2 Points
  • Ruff: 4 Points
  • Jamie: 0 Points

Team EJ maintained their strong momentum into the second half, increasing their halftime lead to 10 points (43-33) after 10 minutes of play. Following a relatively subdued first half, Barbour began to make his presence felt on the offensive end, having chosen to support his teammates earlier. He went on to score 17 of the team-high 25 points in the second half. At this juncture in the game, Team EJ had never fallen behind following 30 minutes of play.

Just when it seemed that Team EJ was set to seize control of the championship, Euphoria, spearheaded by Garry (2 points in the second half) and Dwyer (8 points in the second half), made a strong comeback to level the score at 50. Together, they contributed 28 of Euphoria’s total 33 second-half points. With just three minutes remaining and the game tied, the championship was up for grabs, but Euphoria appeared to have the upper hand. Just when Team EJ's prospects seemed grim, Barbour successfully sank an improbable three-pointer that ricocheted around the rim before finally dropping in for a basket.

He then followed up his score with a steal and a quick runner, giving Team EJ a 5-point lead (55-50) after an impressive 5-0 run. Ultimately, Team EJ clinched the highly sought-after championship after a fiercely contested battle, while Team Euphoria experienced heartbreak in the final moments.

Who says MVPs can’t lead teams to victory? Congratulations to Team EJ on a remarkable season, and best of luck to both teams in the CAC Cup! I look forward to seeing you all for the upcoming Fall SDL session.

Subject: Euphoria edges out 3 Dimensional to advance to SDL Championship to face Team EJ

In a highly competitive match that took an unexpected turn, Euphoria quickly surged ahead with a significant 10-point lead (21-11) after just the first 10 minutes of play. The remarkable performances by Emmanuel (14 points), Dwyer (14 points), Gary (9 points), and Trevor (7 points) fueled this impressive start, as they collectively accounted for all 44 points scored by their team in the first half.

Beyond their scoring, the defensive efforts of Dwyer (1 steal and 2 blocks) and Emmanuel (3 steals) established an intense atmosphere that left 3-D struggling to achieve any offensive rhythm. For 3-D, Eric (11 points), Isak (8 points), and Keith (9 points) led the charge; however, their poor shooting from beyond the arc contributed to an early deficit, resulting in a halftime score of 44-31 with minimal momentum on their side.

Thanks to the outstanding performance of Isak and Keith, who together scored 36 points in the second half, 3-D mounted a significant comeback to close the gap to just 3 points (73 - 70). Isak sank several crucial three-pointers, overcoming his earlier difficulties, and the moment seemed ripe for an upset.

However, it proved to be too late as Emmanuel sealed the victory at the free throw line, allowing Euphoria to earn their place in the #SDL finals against Team EJ and league MVP Daniel Barbour. Make sure to grab your popcorn!

Subject: What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? GGW found out today!

Without reigning MVP Harding and/or Chas in attendance GGW knew it would be an uphill battle, as they faced off against league-leading Euphoria. Things looked promising to start, as Ben Mitchell gave them some expecting production early on connecting on 2 early 3 pointers and Civale, was doing Civale-like things from deep. GGW seemed to be in sync early, but it would last long for Dwyer to absolutely take over offensively. He was getting buckets in a variety of ways and defensively GGW couldn't counter. Dwyer would finish with 27 points but could've easily gone for 50.

He would lead all scorers with 22 first-half points, and Euphoria’s lead would quickly extend to double-digits. E’s 11 points and Gary’s 7 points would help them extend the lead to 19 at the half, but it was an all-around team effort in a variety of ways, including Ruff’s 3 steals and ridiculous stat line as he flirted with a triple-double throughout this matchup.

Euphoria would go into the half leading 45 – 26, but they were just getting started. Emmanuel (27), Gary (23), and Trevor (16) were absolutely scorching in the second half. They combined for a whopping 54 points while playing outstanding defense and continuing to apply pressure.

Led by a monster outing from team captain Ruff who finished with a team-high 14 rebounds and 7 assists, Euphoria would go on to win by 42 in a game that was never in doubt. The Ruff-led squad looks primed to make a deep run, as we approach the 1st round of the playoffs.

Fantastic win fellas!

That’s 3 straight…

First and foremost big shoutout and thank you to Stull and Alan for keeping stats and running the clock for this game.  Coming into this game I had my team Euphoria as the favorite.  Admittedly I’m always picking my team as the favorite no matter what the circumstances are and in this specific situation my team was missing both Joe and Trevor.  Golden Fleece (GF) was missing Luigi but having a sub is always nice.

First half:

Looking at the game notes GF was up 14-2 early. I do recall GF coming back with a Gary buzzer beater three but GF was up 34-29.

Second half:

While GF was able to build a pretty substantial lead it was definitely double figures at one point.  Euphoria battled back mostly off an 11-0 personal run by Emmanuel.  At one point Euphoria was down 3 points under a minute left and I had a costly turnover.  GF went on to win 86-81.

Grades:

Jorge Morel A amazing game he did everything his team needed and was an extremely important reason why they won.

Casey Tenney A+ just look at his stats.

Cameron Daniel B not even mad that he got a tech or that he went 0fer from three.  He contributed positively for his team and they won.

Colin Gray B his three point shooting and free throw shooting percentages weren’t great but he filled a lot of different stat categories which ultimately helped his team win.

Chris Lynch A he missed a free throw but that was the only thing he didn’t do well on the day.

Emmanuel Okharedia A- he got hit from three but 15 was a lot for him to take.  He still played well but I think he can play better.

Jamie Harriott A- didn’t score but had some great defensive stats.

Garry Helm A was sensational, scoring at the rim.  I should deduct from his grade for not scoring 50 but I won’t 😂.

Player of the game:

Casey Tenney did everything typical to what he usually does.  Was on the winning side and largely due to his play.
