Dribble Handoff Blows Out B2 Dropouts to Advance to the Finals
Our second semifinal featured our #1 Seed (Dribble Handoff) and our #4 seed (B2 Dropouts). B2 Dropouts were playing without some significant pieces with Remy Baudet, Jackson Cote AND Schyler Oliveira all missing. Already a dog with those three playing, B2 Dropouts would have to overcome a pretty decent talent gap to steal this game away. Early on, it looked like they might.
Zach Davidson hit a 3 to open the scoring for B2D and then Joe Martin hit a mid range 2. 5-0 B2D. Dribble Handoff definitely came out low energy. Well, everyone except Alex Gatter. He missed an early three point attempt but his assist to Derek Erion got the scoring started for DH. A Disola floater and a Gatter steal that he finished with a layup got Dribble Handoff on top 6-5. But B2D kept fighting. Davidson made two free throws. However, his three point attempt was blocked by Disola on the next possession. The game played pretty close moving forward and Dribble Handoff actually found themselves down 12-11 following a Zach Davidson three. Dribble Handoff took the lead back following an Alex Gatter steal where he found Disola for an easy layup. Dribble Handoff couldn’t seem to put together a run to extend the lead for most of the first half. B2D cut the score down to 19-18 following Martin make on of two free throws after he was fouled putting an offensive rebound back up. That offensive rebound was a theme for B2D in the first half, pulling down 7 of them. Which was surprising considering DH had Erion in the lineup. But, Davidson and Martin are two of the best offensive rebounders we have. This 19-18 score must’ve shifted something in the chemistry of Dribble Handoff because they went up a level at that moment. Erion put back an offensive rebound of his own. Gatter had his third steal of the first half that he took coast to coast for two. Disola hit a floater in the paint. 25-18 DH. Sam Johnson temporarily stopped the run with a three but that didn’t stop DH from scoring. Disola drove past Corey Fein and got fouled, making both free throws. This was a poor matchup for B2D but given their limited roster for the evening they didn’t have much choice. Brock Mickley got involved in the scoring taking advantage of the size advantage he has on Johnson to score in the post. 29-21 DH. Mickley posted up again on the next possession and fed Erion for an easy two when the double team came. Then Mickley hit a fade away two with just 3 seconds left to give DH a 35-23 lead.
It happened so fast. One moment B2D was in the game, and then DH closed the half on a 16-5 run, getting contributions from everyone. That’s the problem with playing against DH, they can just score so fast that if you have ANY offensive lull, you’re going to be behind 10+. B2D needed to come out in the second half with a high level of intensity. This would be difficult considering they only had five guys tonight.
Sam Johnson gave them a flicker of hope when he opened the half with a three pointer. But DH snuffed that flame immediately. Emmanuel Okharedia hit a two and then had an assist to Gatter for 3. Mickley scored on a fast break off feed from Gatter and then Michael Fraher hit one of his patented long twos. That one felt so good he hit another one right after. 46-26 DH. Wow. With 6 minutes left in the first half B2D was only down one. Now four minutes into the second half they were down 20, and without their best scorers that type of lead seemed insurmountable.
They kept fighting with Martin adding to his offensive rebound total and Corey Fein hitting a long two. Manish Chawla even chipped in a bank three pointer. The lead was down to 50-36. And then DH had had enough. Specifically Disola and Okharedia. Disola converted a three point play, then found Erion with a sick assist from damn near half court. Okharedia splashed two threes. And once again, DH showed off their scoring burst. 65-36 was the score now and it was all over. We played things out a little longer with the teams trading some meaningless threes and ended up with a final score 73-47.
B2D gets credit for playing it out and making it interesting for most of the first half. But, being down three key players made this an impossible task. I really liked the way Sam Johnson played tonight and he’s the kind of guy that can be a key contributor on a championship team. B2D also made their presence felt on the glass with Martin and Davidson. It was nice to see Corey Fein finish the season after suffering a gruesome finger injury back in May. Manish Chawla showed off his three point shooting tonight. But, they just didn’t have the horses to get it done.
Dribble Handoff is an offensive machine. Disola, Okharedia and Gatter are a very dynamic trio of offensive playmakers. Throw in the shooting from Fraher, the size from Erion and a brand new post game from Mickley, it’s just a really tough team to slow down on offense.
A quick look ahead to next week for their game against BALL.
You have a trio of strong perimeter players on both sides (Disola/Okharedia/Gatter vs Laureano/Debari/Ball). What BALL has that Dribble Handoff doesn’t is Jonah Feldman who is a “big” who can create his own offense and switch all over on defense. But, what Dribble Handoff has that BALL doesn’t is Derek Erion. A true big with real size that normally does a lot of damage around the hoop altering shots and grabbing rebounds. These have been the two best teams all season and we’re going to be treated to a gem of a game. In game’s like this, it’s a play or two from the role players that can change the outcome. Can Fraher get hot? Can Andy Sealund knock down some threes? Either of those would be huge for Dribble Handoff. Can Buckley be an animal on the glass? Can Klaehne hit some 3s? Either of those would be huge for BALL. My guess is the stars are going to show out, it’s going to come down to these role guys. Or maybe it’s as simple as Disola just goes for 40, or Laureano takes over. So many ways this can go and I’m excited to be there.

B2 Dropouts Close Out Season With Win
We welcomed back Corey Fein who had missed about 6 weeks with a finger injury. He said he wasn't going to shoot much since his finger we're still taped up but then he chucked up a 3 less than a minute into the game. What jumped off the court in the first half was the energy level from Joe Martin. Just absolutely flying around the pain pulling down nearly every rebound and scoring on put backs. He was one of the reasons B2D jumped out to an early 13-5 lead. Corporate Startup did get balanced scroing with every player scoring in the first half including 9 points from Nick Mazzeo and 7 points from Dainis Klaivins. B2D went into half up 28-22.
In the second half it was a lot more Joe Martin just absolutely dominating the glass. CS did pick up their 3 point shooting getting threes from Mazzeo, Klavins and Eliot Sackman. The game was as close as 44-43 but Martin stretched the lead out with a jumper which was part of a 11-2 run that B2D closed with and they walked away with a 55-45 win.
Corporate Startup's season is over. I think this team could have done damage in the playoffs with their collection of talent but they rarely played full complete games. Most of the time they made late charges in the second half, only to come up short.
B2Dropouts will take this momentum into round 1 of the playoffs. They don't have a weak player on the roster and they have a bunch of guys that can score. Between Martin and Zach Davidson they should be able to rebound with anyone. They could definitely make a run.

BALL Rides Aggressive Defense to a Big Win
We kicked off the evening with BALL vs B2 Dropouts. Drew Debari hit two early threes in front of his biggest fan (his son was in attendance) to help BALL jump out to a 6-2 lead. A few minutes later Schyler Oliveria and Lonny Laureano traded 3s to tie the game at 11. Then BALL went on a nice 9-0 run that included a 3 by Jonah Feldman and capped by a 3 from Jamil Ball after Ball stole the rock from Remy Baudet. Remy got a piece of revenge on the next play when he had a nice assist to Joe Martin. Jamil Ball gave us the highlight of the first half when Dan Buckley grabbed a defensive rebound and kicked it out to Ball. Buckley sprinted down the court in time for Ball to feed him a slick behind the back pass for two. Great pass by Ball and great effort from Buckley. It was 22-15 BALL after that but Baudet hit a 3 to cut the lead to 4. Ball pushed the lead out again from there. Ball went on a 5-0 by himself with a couple of FTs, then a steal that he converted into a 3. Then Laureano had a bucket to make it 32-19. A couple of Oliveria 3s, including one with only a second left in the half. BALL called timeout with one second left but the inbounds bounced off of Debari’s hands and hit him in the head as time expired. BALL went into the half 35-27.
Turnovers were the story of the first half. BALL had 9 steals, B2D just had 1. The teams shot about the same, rebounded about the same. The only difference was that BALL created extra possessions for themselves.
Laureano found Feldman for an easy two coming out of the half as B2D was confused which way they were starting the half. But Zach Davis got B2D locked in with back to back 3s both off of feeds from Oliveira. A three pointer from Baudet got the lead down to 38-36. It looked like B2D had all the momentum. Then, they lost it. Laureano had back to back buckets and then Feldman converted a three point play and just like that it was 45-36. A Jackson Cote pass to Davidson for three got the lead down to 6 with 13 minutes left. The lead stayed around 6 or 7 until Baudet hit a three, then had a steal that led to a Jackson Cote bucket and made the score 51-47. A Jamil Ball circus shot over Davidson made the score 55-49 a few minutes later but Martin responded with a two FTs to cut the lead down to 55-51 with 6 minutes left. B2D would not score again after this. Feldman hit a two off a pass from Maurice Klaehne. Debari hit a 3. Debari stole the ball and found Laureano for an easy 2. We closed with a couple of Laureano jumpers and BALL walked away with a 66-51 victory.
BALL got contributions from everyone. Laureano continues to be a real problem for opposing teams to contain. He gets to his spot so smoothly and is great and using pump fakes and hesitations to create space for jumpers. Debari and Ball continue to make the right play, switch on the team pace when appropriate. They’re both great shooters (six combined threes tonight) willinga and able passers (7 combined assists) and make an impact on defense (6 combined steals). Feldman gave them a great post scoring presence tonight and even stepped out a hit a three. Buckley and Klaehne give them consistent high energy plays. Buckley doing most of his work near the basket scoring and rebound while Klaehne is more of a connecting passer and defensive menace (3 steals tonight). They felt in control of this game all night and look ready for the playoffs. BALL would love to stay as a top 2 seed to avoid Dribble Handoff in round one of the playoffs and that won’t be easy given they play the 3 and 4 seeds the next two weeks.
B2D sits as the 4th seed after this loss with Corporate Start Up right behind them. They do a nice job splitting the scoring between Baudet, Oliveira and Davidson. I continue to be impressed by Cote’s passing as a big and think they could run the offense through him in the high post a little more. You can tell they’re missing Corey Fein who they’ve lost to a finger injury, that extra hustle play to keep their run going or stop a run by the other time was something he was great at. They also missed Sam Johnson tonight who gives them another ball handler and that could have limited the amount of steals BALL ended up with tonight. As they’re trying to clinch they’re playoff spot they get a soft matchup next week against Bet The Over before closing with a matchup against Corporate Startup that might be for a playoff spot.

Tempers Flare In Double OT Thriller
The last game of the night was the best one with Hoopa Loompas facing off against B2 Dropouts.
In the early going Carlos Carmona was putting in work for HL scoring their first 6 points, one basket on a drive to the hoop, one nice pull up, and the last two points on a couple of free throws. For B2D Schyler Oliveira was focused on distributing the ball more than shooting and twice had nice passes to Zach Davidson for easy finishes. Davidson was seemingly involved in every play early, especially on the offensive glass. He looked like triple double Westbrook out there skying in from nowhere for offensive rebounds, grabbing three pretty early. Oliveira had a nice drive at the 13 minute mark to tie the game at 6 before Othniel St-Ulme hit a 3 to give the lead back to HL. During a couple of free throw attempts by HL, Oliveira chatted up our referee, Mark, about a missed call from the week before. Oliveira still thinks Mark missed the call and they discussed the video he had of the play. Anyway Ulme continued to make his mark on the game with a beautiful tip pass to Chris Whitney and then big man nailed a rare three pointer. To cap an 8-0 run by HL, grabbing a 14-6 lead. Sam Johnson hit a three off a feed from Oliveira to cut the lead to five and then Oliveria got a bucket of his own to trim the lead to 14-11 before Carmona hit a three to push the lead back out. This three by Carmona started an HL 13-4 run with the two highlights being a no look pass from Ulme to Whitney for two and Carmona hanging in mid air, seemingly defying gravity and altering his layup release for two. A deep Oliveira three and two Oliveira free throws got the lead down to 28-20 and started a 9-0 run by B2D to finish the half that included a three by Remy Baudet and a three by Davidson. Oliveira missed a putback at the buzzer that would have tied the game.
The teams looked pretty evenly matched through one half. Carlos Carmona played well but had THREE separate fast break layups he couldn’t convert including one that Davidson nearly blocked through the wall. HL was also getting essentially NO second chance shot opportunities. Whereas B2D had 11 offensive rebounds in the first half, HL only had one. Kevin Ryff had two first half three pointers as well as two steals showing off his well-rounded game early. In fact both teams were good at forcing turnovers in the first half with four separate guys having recording two steals. Carmona, Ryff, and Aidan Enright for HL as well as Johnson for B2D.
Manish Chalwa and Enright traded 3s to open the second half. That made three juiced up Enright’s energy levels as he attacked the offensive glass on the next possession and converted the putback. Jackson Cote showed off his nifty passing skills for big man when he found a cutting Davidson for two. Carmona then FINALLY converted a fastbreak layup. 35-31 HL. Enright continued to make his mark on the game with a 3 to make it 38-31 which Oliveira responded to with a three of his own 38-34. A Carmond drive through three dudes, a Carmona three, a missed dunk by Oliveira (which prompted a “delete that clip to his lady friend in the attendance”) and another Enright three highlighted the next couple of minutes. Enright was seriously taking over the game. Two early threes, crashing the offensive glass. After doing basically nothing in the first half he looked like the best player on the floor. It was 46-38 HL at this point and they had all the momentum. Joe Martin got B2D within 6 after a puback and then Davidson got it to four with a putback of his own. This all happened while HL’s big man Whitney was on the bench. Without him HL really had no protection against the intensity with which B2D was crashing the glass. Davidson and Enright traded buckets to make the score 48-44 before Baudet hit a transition pull up three to cut the lead to 1. Oliveria then drove to the basket to take the lead, although, he argued he was fouled as well and should have had an and-1 opportunity. Despite that missed call, B2D had all the momentum now and only further solidified it when Baudet took a charge. When HL finally got the ball back, Davidson picked Ryff’s pocket and got fouled on the other end. He converted one of two free throws to take a two point lead. Ryff got his revenge with a nice pull up jumper to tie the game at 50 with 4 minutes left. Ryff then hit a HUGE three on HL’s next possession. 53-50 HL. Oliveira responded with a 3 of his own. TIED AGAIN! WHAT A GAME! Baudet hit one of two free throws when he was fouled but Ulme hit a three to take a two point lead!!! At this point I was so locked into the score and time I don’t have a note on who tied the game at 56 (terrible job by me) but B2D did tie the game (I think it was Oliveira but could have been Davidson). And we went to overtime after Carmona missed a desperation three at the buzzer!!!
The first overtime didn’t have much action except Oliveira shouting that the refs missed another time he was fouled. Carmona had two free throw attempts he missed. Literally zero points in the first overtime. So we went to overtime #2!!!
Baudet FINALLY broke the overtime scoring drought with a great drive to the hoop. 58-56 B2D.
Now the rest of the game, I got kind of lost in. Because it was a bit chaotic. Oliveira had the ball with his team up two. He there was a missed foul on him but Baudet was fouled shorty thereafter. But this missed call was the last straw for Oliveira. And he let Mark know he was not happy with the lack of call there and all of the previous ones. Some version of “get your head in the game”. May have been more explicitis, but I don’t know if anyone’s kids reads these so I’ll let you imagination run wild on the language used. Mark yelled back at Oliveira that all he does is complain every week to which Oliveira responded it’s because Mark wasn’t doing his job, he needs to make the calls. Mark told him he talks too much and the yelling escalated from there. Both parties assured the other they weren’t scared of them. They emphasized that point consistently over the next 2 minutes. Mind you, this was a two point game with maybe 20 seconds left when this started. Marlon (our other ref) had seen enough and called a tech on Oliveira. Carmona got two free throws to tie, he only made one of two. While he was shooting the yelling continued and the two parties got increasingly closer to each other, needing to be physically restrained by other players. Oliveira was kicked out of the game but that didn’t stop him from continuing to voice his frustrations. There was a lot of “if you want to do something do something” banter. Meanwhile Baudet was stepping to the line to shoot his free throws. Somehow he managed to compose himself enough to knock both down and give B2D a three point lead. We finally got the game going again which whimpered out with a missed three from HL and B2D walked away with a double OT 60-57 win.
Whew. Okay, let’s reset a bit.
HL played extremely well given they were without their best player (Christian Brooks). Carmona was aggresive all night and they got timely bursts from Enright and Ryff. They really should have closed the game out when they were up 46-38 but they just kept getting smashed on the offensive glass whenever Whitney was out of the game. This loss does tighten up the standings with 3 weeks left but HL gets a game against Bet The Over next week before closing with games against the top 2 seeds. They can’t mess around next week and likely have to split the last two to secure their playoff spot.
For B2D put aside the way the game ended, they fought hard to claw back into this game multiple times. Baudet, Oliveira and Davidson give them a great scoring trio and they compliment each other well. They can also get big Sam Johnson games when necessary (it wasn’t tonight) and Cote allows them to matchup with bigs. This is a very strong team but they’re definitely missing Corey Fein who gave them so many high energy plays when he was healthy. We’ll see if the way the game ended impacts their team morale or chemistry moving forward but for now they’ll take the win. They also get a game against Bet The Over in the next 3 weeks, as well as a tough game against BALL before closing with a game against Corporate Startup that MIGHT be a play-in game.
Should be an intense 3 week finish for both teams.
