(2) Calypso North Stars (46) v. (5) NNHS (53)

Playoff of upsets continues as championship favorite Calypso falls to relentless NNHS squad

The North Stars seemed dialed in at the outset of the contest, immediately sinking a couple threes to take a small but crucial 13 to 9 lead with half of the first half gone. The game tightened up from there as both NNHS and Calypso locked in defensively, with NNHS just scoring 2 points to cut the lead to 2 over the next three and a half minutes. Calypso went on a nice run from there, locking in on some issues in the NNHS defense to go on a 12 to 4 run over the next four minutes, taking a 25 to 15 lead that seemed like it would be tough to overcome given the relatively low level of scoring present in the game to that point. But NNHS fought back instantly, taking advantage of the short time left and scoring 6 points over the next couple minutes to cut the lead to 25 to 21 with thirty seconds left in the first, allowing Calypso to sink a single free throw in that final half minute to carry a 26 to 21 advantage into the break. Both teams had to be relatively pleased at that juncture, with the North Stars holding a lead but NNHS showing just how hard it would be to put them away in this one.

The second half started as a bit of a slog, with both teams incredibly tight as they tried to grab the advantage. The first few minutes saw absolutely no scoring, with even some NNHS chances at the free throw line failing to produce any points at all. Defensively, Spencer Schneider starred, even showing out with a possession in which he locked down MVP Tony Caletti, blocking him two straight times to deny him chances in the paint. With fifteen and a half minutes left, Calypso finally cashed in a bucket, seemingly breaking the seal that had been put on at halftime. Just two minutes later they were up 32 to 23, forcing a NNHS timeout with thirteen and a half minutes remaining. The pause turned out to be effective, as NNHS immediately went on a run of their own, scoring 10 points to Calypso's 3 in the next three minutes to cut the lead to 35 to 33. But once again the North Stars put some distance between themselves and NNHS, going on a 6 to 0 run. NNHS finally tied the game up at 41 with just five minutes left in the contest. Matt Wood really took over the game at that point, hitting a three to go up 44 to 41 with three and a half minutes remaining. Then, Wood made a fantastic on-ball steal and raced up the court to lay in the ball and take a lead that NNHS would not give up. Calypso's Caletti and NNHS' Philip Barnett exchanged a basket each, keeping the NNHS advantage level. Wood hit a couple more free throws and Trevor Larsen hit a three to bring Calypso inches closer, but the game was all but over. Calypso's desperation heaves from deep refused to go down and NNHS walked away with a huge comeback win and a berth in the championship game.

(4) A Team Has No Name (44) v. (5) NNHS (45)

NNHS squeak out 1-point dub to advance in yet another tight matchup in first round of playoffs

NNHS started out strong, going up 11 to 3 early. The matchup tightened up quickly, with A Team Has No Name going on a 16 to 8 run the rest of the first half to tie the game going into the break at a low, playoff-suitable 19. The second half saw more of the same, as NNHS once again took a slight lead at 26 to 21 with sixteen and a half minutes remaining. The next two minutes saw A Team Has No Name immediately draw even once again, even taking a lead by the twelve minute mark, up 32 to 29 with little of the game remaining. The intensity of the game was evident throughout, with a chair being tossed on the sidelines and some clear anger and emotion being displayed on the court itself. NNHS fell behind to its biggest deficit of the contest with just eight minutes and forty seconds remaining, down 5 at 35 to 40, feeling the pressure and taking a smart timeout to regain their compsure. It worked, as they clamped down hard on defense, not allowing another point for the next four-plus minutes while they scored 4 points themselves, drawing the score to 39 to 40. The next two minutes showed even more resolve for NNHS, as they regained the lead with two minutes remaining, up 44 to 42.

NNHS managed to get themselves just one more point down the stretch - then, A Team Has No Name created a couple chances for itself to tie the game and send it into overtime. First, DPOY Mike Gately fouled three point shooter Michael Chroney on his way down, as Chroney missed the shot but had a chance to tie the game down 42 to 45 with just 6.6 seconds remaining on the clock. Chroney managed to sink 2 of 3, drawing the score to 44 to 45. Philip Barnett then attempted to inbound the ball for NNHS but couldn't find a suitable teammate to pass to, instead turning the ball over on a violation, giving A Team Has No Name one final chance to stay alive. Instead, their shot attempt went awry, and A Team Has No Name fell out of the playoffs, with NNHS hanging on by the skin of its teeth to move on to the next round.

A Team Has No Name (57) v. NNHS (52)

NNHS suffers disappointing defeat as comeback falls short; A Team Has No Name buckles down to secure dub heading into playoffs

NNHS had a rough start to the game, as they headed into halftime down 8 and playing at a level that made them seem lucky to be down just single digits at that stage. However, the squad really tightened things up as the game wore on and over the break, as they quickly cut the lead down to 4, and went on a run from there to grab their first lead since the beginning stages of the contest at 47 to 46 (after being down 23 to 31 at the half). From there, the two squads wrestled back and forth with the lead, with NNHS holding it to begin the final 2 minutes. At that point, the seemingly dormant No Name offense clicked back into place and NNHS was nearly helpless to do anything but watch the win slip from their grasp as they fell under .500 heading into the playoffs. Regardless, the defeat had some silver linings - namely, the play of Mike Gately, and the return of key figures in Spencer Schneider and Charlie Rao. Gately injected his patent energy and speed into the game, as he led the team in scoring with 14 points. His biggest contributions, however, may have been on the other end of the court, as he made 2 on-ball steals (converted directly into baskets by Gately himself, racing down the floor despite heavy pressure from the former ballhandlers) and recorded a massive 4 blocks, also grabbing 9 boards including 3 on the offensive glass - tied for the team lead with Philip Barnett and Deven Labovitch. Barnett served as the team's point guard, dishing 5 assists to lead the team while Schneider, Gately, and Matt Wood all recorded 3 themselves. Wood was also the second-leading scorer on the night, cashing 3 of his 8 triples (and of the 7 made total by the team) for his 9 points, while Jackson Eckenrode and Schneider came in right behind with 8 points apiece. Despite the loss, NNHS has to be excited about its return to a full roster and what it means for their chances in the playoffs. They'll be facing a tough, ascending BADDIES squad that has been dominating as of late with size and skill down low - a good shooting night likely needs to be on deck for them to have a good shot at making it through to round 2. It'll be the first time the two teams face off, with their previous scheduled contest resulting in a forfeit by the BADDIES.

Meanwhile, A Team Has No Name showed some essential perserverance in holding on to win the game, rather than folding to NNHS' late game onslaught. It was a pretty well- balanced offensive performance from the team, with athletic star guards Michael Chroney and Micah Evans leading the way with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Chroney pulled down 14 rebounds (leading the team) including 2 on the offensive glass, behind only Eddie Odio who pulled down 4 there. Andy Coppage did a nice job playing point, dishing 4 assists, tied with Steven McGuire for the team lead. McGuire had an incredible defensive sequence at the opening of the game, swatting an incredible 4 shots in 3 straight NNHS possessions to quite effectively dissuade NNHS players from driving deep into the paint. Navid Sharifi was a late arrival but provided an incredible jolt to the offense, as he led the squad with 3 of the team's 6 makes from deep, including one right off the bench as he checked in and immediately swished a triple much to the delight of his teammates. As a reward, A Team Has No Name finishes over .500 and will face a deceiving 4-5 Furious Rim Ticklers squad that just got lit up by an incredible Julius Swerving team. Their first matchup was an incredibly tight one that resulted in the No Names squeaking out a 2-point victory; this game is easily the most intriguing of the first round.

NNHS (56) v. Calypso North Stars (70)

North Stars continue roll to stay at top of table; NNHS unable to produce enough offense to keep pace

Matt Wood led the way for NNHS with 21 points, hitting 5 of his 10 threes. Mike Gately brough incredible energy for the team, grabbing 10 boards including 4 offensive rebounds, also dishing 4 assists to tie for the team lead with guard Philip Barnett (7 points). Gately was also incredible on the defensive end, ending up with 2 steals and all of the team's 5 blocks. The 2 steals were tied for the team lead with nearly every player, with Jackson Eckenrode, Deven Labovitch, and Wood all also grabbing 2 thefts, and Barnett getting a steal himself as well. NNHS was in every passing late and had some really solid on ball defense for their 9 steals, as they really seemed to bother the North Stars' ball handlers at every possible opportunity. Despite the strong defensive stats, NNHS couldn't get stops at timely moments, as the North Stars, despite their loose handle on the ball, still managed a solid 70 points. For NNHS, the three ball from shooters outside of Wood was hit and miss, and likely spelled doom for the squad, as they went just 9 of 27 overall - a decent 33%, but a total they'll strive to build on to win more of these games in the near future. They'll face another .500 team next week in the No Names, coming off a solid win against the North Stars' next opponent Run and Gun.

Meanwhile, Trevor Britton had an excellent game from three to more than match NNHS' Wood, hitting 6 of his 8 attempts from deep on his way to 20 points. Britton generally had an all around game, grabbing 8 boards and tying for the team lead in assists with fellow star guard Tony Caletti. The other Trevor - Trevor Larsen - once again had a great game offensively as well, scoring 19 points, also nabbing 3 steals and the team's only 2 blocks. John Letteney (10 points) continued his recent streak of firing from deep and did so effectively, making 2 of 3 of his perimeter attempts, emblematic of the team's strong performance from the three point line as the North Stars finished 12 of 29 from deep, their 3 greater makes representing a large portion of the margin of victory. Lucas Rathjens was once again a crucial cog in the win for Calypso, providing huge interior defense as the team's sole big, while Ed Bernstein had a solid game on the interior, scoring 8 points all on makes from the paint. The North Stars look primed for a deep playoff run, and will have a final tune up and preview game against second worst Run and Gun to solidify themselves as the first or second overall seed in the league, potentially playing them again in the first round.
